Revisions come and go, but the Force is forever.
I'd hate to break it to some people out there, but you didn't create Star Wars. I'd also like to point out that we should be thankful that they even released the original trilogy after all these years. Now that begs the question, "is it really the ORIGINAL trilogy, or the Special Edition ones that people take as an offense to their genitalia?". The answer would be the latter, and I still don't get why people make such a big deal over it. Does it really matter that Greedo shot first? I sure as hell hope not, especially considering his small role in Episode IV. Should we care that much about the new monsters in the Cantina, or the CG scenes at Cloud City. No. Why people hold the original releases so precious to them is beyond me, and that's coming from a Star Wars geek. While I'm only 20 years old, I was able to enjoy the Special Editions in theaters in the late 90s, which I may add, was after I became obsessed with the original versions. And you know what? I liked the Special Editions too. So for those who can't read, and didn't get the THX remastered VHS trilogy before the Special Editions hit stores, and didn't see Lucas himself saying that that would be the last time the first 3 movies would be released like that (meaning, original theatrical versions), then I feel sorry for them. Yeah, it'd be nice to get them on dvd as well, but I don't think anyone understands that this is Lucas' baby, and he can do whatever he wants with it. Sure, Jabba in Episode IV looks terrible, but still better than he did in the theatrical Special Edition version, and Han's jerky head move animation is still bad, but those small additions don't change that the original Star Wars trilogy is one of, if not- the, best trilogies in movie history. Very few movies can stand the test of time like Star Wars has, and that's a lot to say when you remember when they first came out. No matter what, Star Wars will always be popular, and always a great trilogy.
It's almost pointless to summarize the Star Wars plot at this point in time, since nearly everyone's seen it, and knows what's going to happen. But either way...Star Wars is basically the classic tale of good vs evil. Rebels vs an evil Empire. The first of the movies in this box set, A New Hope, begins the journey of Luke Skywalker, a simple farm boy on a desert planet. After the evil Darth Vader takes Princess Leia into his control aboard his ship, she sends a hologram asking for help in her droid: R2-D2. R2 goes to the planet with his counterpart, C-3PO. They're looking for an Obi-Wan Kenobi, who happens to be a friend to Luke. They find out about the Princess' situation, and head out to find her after getting help from Han Solo and Chewbacca, two smugglers with the fastest ship in the galaxy. What they find though, is much more- the Empire has a fully operational space station- The Death Star. It also happens to be a weapon, capable of destroying entire planets. It's up to Luke, Han, Leia and the others to put an end to it along with the other Rebels. In the sequels, the story leads more over to Luke and his past. Who his father is, his family, and his becoming of a Jedi Knight. And in the end, if you've seen the prequels, you'll see that all of this combined is about the redemption of Anakin Skywalker. My plot summary here isn't that good, given how much really happens in these movies, but you're in for a treat. Special effects that no one could even fathom came from these movies, and most of them hold up to this day. And very few movies have had such an influence over the films to come as Star Wars has. This is one series that deserves the hype it gets.
Let's get something straight- the transfer for these movies is almost perfect. A New Hope looks better than it has the right to, but there's still some problems here and there, given when it was made. Things get much better though, when we get to The Empire Strikes Back and Return of the Jedi. By then, all flaws are gone, and the print looks like it was made just yesterday. Lightsabers look the way they're supposed to, and that's good enough for me. The same applies for the audio- it gets better as the films progress.
Each of the movies has its own commentary track, and all of them are worth a listen. If you've heard the ones on the new trilogy, then you know what to expect here- all out information regarding the making of the movie. They're by George Lucas, Ben Burtt, Dennis Muren and Carrie Fisher. Carrie doesn't say much aside from the scenes where she's really involved, but George and Ben do most of the talking. Ben's the sound mixer here, and after hearing him talk about how they got some of the sounds and languages for the different races, I have a newfound respect for people in the sound industry. It sounds a lot tougher than it seems. Dennis deals with most of the special effects, and fills in some info here and there, but not much. George really has the most diversity as far as what he talks about. From ideas to the original script, he covers everything. Who knew that the Banthas were really baby elephants with the skins cloaked over them? He also mentions references to Akira Kurosawa's films, which is a nice touch of respect. The second disc is so packed, words can't do it justice. There's a two and a half hour long documentary: Empire of Dreams, which is the best documentary I've ever seen regarding the making of a movie. It covers George Lucas' start as a film maker in the beginning, how Star Wars barely got financial support, the San Diego Comic Con being what really helped the movie get made, and more. Deleted scenes are in this documentary as well, most being from A New Hope. But there's no footage of Jedi's original ending where Lando doesn't make it out of the Death Star. Again, this is 2 hours and 30 minutes, so summarizing it even more would take forever. Hardcore fans are required to see this, and for the casual ones, it gives you more respect for George, regardless of what he's become. It's also worth noting that all the interviews here are new, and no old ones were used. There are also featurettes on the characters, lightsabers, and one about the legacy of Star Wars. These aren't anywhere near as in-depth as Empire of Dreams, and a bit redundant, they're still good. Finally are still galleries, an Xbox demo for Battlefront, trailers, and a sneak peek at Episode III where Hayden Christensen dons Darth Vader's armor. For a fourth bonus disc, which usually gets nothing in sets like this, they went all out.
Everyone should really lay off the revised trilogy, if only because they can get ready to complain about the new trilogy, and how it -is- being revised right now. Yoda in Episode I will be CG now, and a few other minor upgrades will be done. While it would've been nice to have some of technological updates to errors in this trilogy (the stop motion Tauntaun still bugs me), it's ok. It's George's movie, and he can keep doing whatever he wants to it. Thank you Mr. Lucas, for creating a legacy that'll stand the test of time.
Here's a review as if you need it !!
I bought this boxset about a year ago now and have watched it many times over. It brings all three of the original films together in one amazing boxset ! The extras are fantastic and I watch them time and again. The only one thing I would have like to have seen would be the option to watch the original films without the new add-ins that Mr Lucas felt he had to add to them. But then I do love the new bits too so I shouldn't complain !
This is a fitting boxset for an amazing trilogy !! If you haven't bought this it is worth every penny. Buy from Amazon for a good price too !
POINTLESS!!!
I LOVE THE STAR WARS MOVIE'S BUT HERE'S A THOUGHT. WHY DOESN'T GEORGE LUCAS (PR WHOMEVER) RELEASE A SET WITH THE ENTIRE SERIES INCLUDING THE PHANTOM MENNACE, ATTACK OF THE CLONES AND REVENGE OF THE SITH???
