Top Secret: Spy Kids Great Family Fun FULL SKULL BABY! FULL SKULL BABY! FULL SKULL BABY! FULL SKULL BABY! FULL SKULL BABY!
Many years after its release, SPY KIDS remains an extremely fresh family film. Most kid's flicks pander and deliver only the bare minimum. SPY KIDS however, delivers creative concepts and techniques in a fun, non-threatening manner.

Robert Rodriguez, who wrote directed and edited the film in his underground laboratory, shows respect to children of all ages, not just the young ones, making the film as powerful as a higher profile adult film.

After nine years away from their work as international spies, Gregorio and Ingrid Cortez return to the field. But, their style is a bit rusty and they are captured by the latest Super-Villain.

The globe trotting fun uses Mexico as its home base and so immediately has a unique look and feel to it. Antonio Banderas and Carla Gugino are splendid as secret agents/parents with banter worthy of the best romantic comedies. Enter Carmen and Juni, their children who always thought their folks were lame. They quickly adapt and become super spies of their own.

All the best bond conventions are used here: great gadgets, evil villains with their minions and a super army that is unfortunately all thumbs. All this is all the more fun in the hands of near ten year olds.

If I have one complaint, it is that the film making becomes less ambitious when there are several children on the screen. It feels like they just turn the camera on and let it roll. It is hardly a major issue, just a blip on a super creative and visually stylistic film. Other than that and a few unresolved plot elements, the film is great fun for the family.

Followed by two sequels!

There is a nice audio and video transfer on the DVD.

"Floop is a madman! Help us! Save us!"
