Breathtaking film
A "sling blade" is what 12-year old, mentally-retarded Karl used to kill his mother and her lover many years ago. Now middle-aged and released from the state mental hospital, Karl (Billy Bob Thornton) returns to his hometown, completely alone and so helpless that he even tries to go back to the hospital. But Karl does begin his life on the outside and befriends a boy who is as lonely as he is. Karl moves in with the boy and his mother, who are abused by her drunken boyfriend (Dwight Yoakum) - a man just as mean as Karl's father was.
I put off seeing this move for years because I thought it would be too depressing. While it is sad, I'm glad I saw it, because the story was fascinating and all of the actors were extraordinary. I guessed what the ending would be early on so I didn't feel hopeless watching the story unfold; instead I was caught up in the spell of Billy Bob and the world he created on the screen. Thornton is unrecognizable as the simple man with a cruel past, and his performance is utterly convincing. Lucas Black, as the boy, is also excellent and John Ritter has a very good role as a gay shopkeeper. A thought-provoking movie that takes an unsentimental look at real pain. Recommended.

billy bob's best acting performance
this was without a shadow of a doubt the next best thing since gump the only thing that differs from gump is the length this movie doesn't try to be funny it was meant to be more of a dramatic film but once who see and hear how billy bob's plays mentally retird like hanks did in gump you can't help but laugh the late great talented comic actor john ritter also starred in this as a gay man who protects billy in the movie i love the relationship between billy bob and the little boy thoughout the film it made the movie more speical because he could relate to the little boy and the little boy could relate to him billy character was a well spoken but sick minded person who had a severly crazy side to him a nice lady who is the little boy's mom takes billy under her wing to good care of him but her abusive boyfriend is impatience and quickly doesn't like billy he is also jealous of the strong relationship between him and the little boy because he is suppose to be the father figure but he saw that the little boy wanted billy to be his dad or much older brother since he was mentally challenge at the end of the movie the mean man gets what he deserves
