Showtime (Widescreen Edition) Reviews

Showtime Messes Up BIGTIME! FULL SKULL BABY! FULL SKULL BABY! empty skull, sniff. empty skull, sniff. empty skull, sniff.
I swear there was a time when Robert De Niro was in a movie, it usually meant it was good. Right now I'm thinking of "Goodfellas", "Casino", "The Deer Hunter", "Raging Bull", and "The Godfather pt.2" not to mention many many other true classics in cinema. If De Niro wants to try "lighter" stuff, that's fine. I didn't mind "Analyze This". I thought it was a good movie. But, there's a line between good and bad films. And De Niro is sadly crossing this line.
"Showtime" to be honest has a rather mindless plot. It's on the corny side. There is nothing memorable about this film. I saw it Saturday and today, I can't remember more than 5 mins put together of what I saw.
Why is this movie so bad? It's boring. I never felt like the movie went anywhere. It has all these jokes and ideas in it's head but, nothing ever amounts to much. The jokes aren't that funny. I chuckled, I admit. But, there were no big laughs. The movie just plain and simple lacks in every department except for one. It has a nice cast; Robert De Niro, Eddie Murphy, Rene Russo and a cameo by Willam Shatner.
"Showtime" is about two cops. One who does his job well and another who only became a cop because he was a bad waiter. The good cop is Mitch Preston (Robert De Niro) and bad one is Trey Sellars (Eddie Murphy). Sellers want to become an actor. And after an incident in the open moments of the film, (I won't give it away)Sellers finds out that he and Preston are now going to be partners on a reality cop show called..."Showtime". The reason for the show is because Preston is seen as a loose cannon. A "Dirty Harry" as tv producer Chase Renzi (Rene Russo) describes him. The "humor" comes from the fact that these two cops don't like each other. This all sounds mind numbingly boring to me.
"Showtime" has one good scene. It deals with Willam Shatner trying to "teach" De Niro and Murphy to act like tv cops. Who knows, maybe this could have been a good film. But, what we see on screen is anything but a good film.
Bottom-line: Few laughs in this mediocre yet predictable comedy. That has mundane acting. And is very boring!

At least it's not Beverly Hills Cop 8... FULL SKULL BABY! FULL SKULL BABY! FULL SKULL BABY! empty skull, sniff. empty skull, sniff.
OK, DeNiro is one of the great dramatic actors of our generation. He's done some light comedies (Midnight Run, Meet the Parents), some light drama (Falling in Love), and, well, his masterpieces (Godfather, Goodfellas, Raging Bull, Taxi Driver, etc.) Sadly, his comedic range is limited. He plays the same kind of detached, slightly confused and cynical character in all his comedies. Now, add in Eddie Murphy, who has NO range whatsoever except loud and obnoxious and smart-talking. What do you get? Well, a so-so comedy with two actors of limited comedic range pretending to be the subjects of a "reality" TV show that's "more real" than "Cops." Murphy's a wanna be actor, so he's up for the gig. DeNiro shot a television camera (yeah, right) and the network says it'll won't sue if he'll star in the reality cop show called, doh, "Showtime." This tepid movie has "formula" written all over it. You just KNOW DeNiro's gonna be the stand-offish partner who in the end comes around, and you KNOW Murphy is going to be loud, obnoxious and, well, even more loud and obnoxious, and, worse, laugh that cheesy laugh of his. Rene Russo is one-dimensional as the producer of the show and, of course, she and Bob get a little romance going by the end of the movie. How cliche! My family was about to give up on this DVD about one-third of the way through when it FINALLY began to get somewhat interesting and we ended up sitting through the rest of the movie. My 10-year-old son liked it a lot more than the grown-ups, and I just kept watching DeNiro and thinking, "What a waste of talent!" It's not the worst comedy of the year. Hands-down, that goes to "The Royal Tenenbaums." But it's nowhere near the best. If you want to just kill a couple of hours with brainless, formulaic comedy, then this is just your kind of movie. If you like a little more intelligence in a movie, skip this and do something fun, like clean the house.
