Showcase performance for Rich Roundtree! Moses Gunn equally good as villian
Great early 1970's Det. movie starring Rich
Roundtree as tough cop out to bust criminal
rings run by Gunn. Supporting cast outstanding!
Copied many times, but never duplicated in junk
'blacksploitation' films of the genre and era!
Gunn later was very good in many pics, especially
Clint Eastwood's underrated 'Heartbreak Ridge'
and Roundtree, Eastwood starred with Burt Reynolds
in City Heat, also a good, but somewhat disjointed
film Dir. by Richard Benjamin.
"The Man"
Handsome, strong, intelligent and able to get the job done. Shaft was the man and he was black. What a good combination and one that was long overdue.
It was so refreshing to see him take control and handle any situation that came his way. On top of it all he did not discriminate as far as being a lady's man was concerned. Black or white he still was the lover, which at that time was not seen on the big screen even though it was happening alot in real life.
Do you know how many men bought turtle neck shirts and leather trench coats after watching that movie? Quite a few where I lived and probably many other places to. I highly recommend this movie to anyone who likes action, drama and a man who's presence alone was magnetic!!!
