Great landmark episodes
Sex and City has gotten better and better since its debut a few years ago, but it is still fun to go back and revisit the way it all began and realize that this was a wonderful show from day one. The characters all begin to develop quite naturally by the third or fourth episode and the show becomes quite addicting by that point as well. This is a hilarious look on life in New York from four sassy young womens' points of view, but anyone can relate to the problems that come up in their never-dull lives. The DVD features some nice extra features; however the picture is a bit grainy in some scenes for some reason (that's why it did not get a full 5 stars) which is annoying at times. Other than that, a wonderful release. Make sure you check out seasons 2 and 3 as well. Can't wait for the release of season 4!
Do we have to subscribe to cable to enjoy "Sex in the City?"
Are we doomed to have to order cable to see "Sex in the City"? Is it possible to avoid the agonizing and empty wait for the cable guy to install an overpriced service that still pads programming with tons of commercials? Are the talk and all the awards lavished on the cable show all hype and glitz? I decided to order the complete collection of the first season of "Sex in the City" and check it out.
It is hilarious, surprising, urbane and enlightening. I was expecting fruit for thought and got a delicious and earthy light meal with lots of chocolate and sparkling wine for desert. It is a fun and a real observation of the single world that is out there and how it views the current sexual mores, the foibles of the urban psychological landscape, and the married world. The writing and performances are fresh and explore the Manhattan of Candace Bushnell's columns with honesty, charm, and stylish shoes. Sarah Jessica Parker (Carrie), Kim Cattrall (Samantha), Kristin Davis (Charlotte), and Cynthia Nixon (Miranda) are a spicy ensemble that are (Middle English word for procreation) funny. The cable guy can hook me up later. The memory of the first episode's scene where "Big" delicious responds to Carrie's question, "Have you ever been in love before?", will sustain me until I can see the next episodes.
My next review for Amazon.com will be, "How long can a viewer wait for a successful online store to stock the second and following seasons of "Sex in the City?"
The VHS format provided enjoyable viewing.
Chronicles of a Modern Woman
One of the BEST shows that HBO, or any television network for that matter, has come up with in...years! At last, us 20-somethings (heading towards our 30's), have a show to call our own! Superbly cast, Carrie (Sarah Jessica Parker), Samantha (Kim Cattrall), Charlotte (Kristin Davis), and Miranda (Cynthia Nixon) give us characters to which we can all relate.
Carrie, a NY-City paper columnist who writes provoking shorts about "sex and the city," is a witty, trendy, modern woman of the '90's--and a true romantic at heart. She wants the sweep-you-off-your-feet, love-at-first-sight type of romance which she seems to get from Mr. Big (Chris Noth)...but Mr. Big isn't ready to give back to her to the same degree (c'mon, we've ALL been there). Samantha, the most liberated and sexually adventurous of the four, is "a woman trapped in a New York City man's body"...and all she wants is a good time. As she so poignantly puts it, "I'm tri-sexual; I'll try anything once!" Miranda, a corporate lawyer, is the epitome of the hardened, jaded, suspicious 30-something woman with a razor-sharp sense of humor, and a heart of gold. And Charlotte, an idealistic, sorority-type prude, searches for a man with 3 qualities: money, looks, and an apartment on the East Side. Watch Carrie, and her three cronies, go from man, to man, to man in their never-ending search for "Mr. Right," while they often find, and settle, for "Mr. Right Now". This show is HILARIOUS, well-written, always versatile, quite witty, and a sumptuous eye-candy for the trend-addicted crowd. I rented it to see if it was worth to own...and my answer? YES, YES, YES! I'm buying it--and so should you! This is a piece of TV history, and an essential guide to pop-culture, and every modern woman should own a copy!
