Kevin Spacey is amazing! FULL SKULL BABY! FULL SKULL BABY! FULL SKULL BABY! FULL SKULL BABY! FULL SKULL BABY!
If, like me, you're a big Kevin Spacey fan you'll love this one. A very twisted and thoroughly entertaining piece of film making. From Brad Pitts performance as the anxious, young, brash detective with an attitude, to Morgan Freemans laid back, wise old man acting, to Kevin Spaceys psychotic, demented turn as a deranged serial killer, this movie hits all the right spots! Great direction, great location scouting, excellent script and plot. This movie is top of the line! Definitely check it out.

Mostly Predictable FULL SKULL BABY! FULL SKULL BABY! FULL SKULL BABY! empty skull, sniff. empty skull, sniff.
Young cop and old cop. Damsel. Rusting big city. Serial killer. Library research uncovers clues. Seven has a couple new twists toward the end, but is mostly cliche. (In the commentaries, we learn the actors are responsible for the film's unconventional ending. The budget - including the 4 big stars' paychecks - put the studio at financial risk; so the studio pushed for an already re-written, focus-group friendly, ending. The stars insisted on the riskier original script and won out. Good for them).

Kudos to Kevin Spacey for his role as the killer. The part originally went to Dr. Evil, but there were creative differences and Evil quit in disgust. (Dr. Evil insisted the movie be called "Ei8ht," with the 8th deadly sin being "in-so-lence." He inflated the budget by $5 million - insisting on "sharks with freakin' laser beams attached to their heads"). Kevin Spacey filled in and obviously stayed true to Dr. Evil's vision of the role. Spacey is subtly ill-tempered.

The rest of the movie is pretty standard, really.

One of the best from the 90s FULL SKULL BABY! FULL SKULL BABY! FULL SKULL BABY! FULL SKULL BABY! FULL SKULL BABY!
This was one of the first DVDs I ever purchased and continue to be impressed by both the film and the extra content presented in this edition. Director David Fincher shows that he is truly one of the best film makers around by the way he handles the material. No shot is pointless nor is any of the dialogue throwaway.

The characters and plot all begin as if this is a run-of-the mill cliched cop-movie but the film soon evolves into something quite different. Sinister and unexpected this movie had me hooked as the two cops investigate a string of brutal murders.

I found the film enjoyable but not light-hearted. For fans of these types of movies this is easily one of the best. I would not recommend this to people who don't like profanity or violence. Even though most of the violence in this movie is implied rather than explicit it can still be hard to stomach for some viewers.

All in all a great plot, good acting, masterfully directed and very engrossing. The movie also brings out some interesting themes on morality, apathy and life in general without preaching to its audience. One of my favourite films of all time.
