Great commentaries (contains spoilers)
When I first heard this film was being made and that Emma Thompson and Hugh Grant were going to be in it, I thought, "Yes! Hugh Grant as Willoughby and Emma Thompson as the unpleasant sister-in-law!" But no. However, the commentaries explain the casting and then it made more sense. By the way, Kate Winslet is perfect and Alan Rickman gets the girl.
Very Good Indeed!
This is a wonderful movie with a wonderful cast and beautiful script. I don't really know what else to say except that I absolutely adore this film. Alan Rickman is superb as Colonel Brandon, I fall in love with him over and over again each time I watch this movie. He's wonderful, as is Hugh Grant as Edward Ferrars. Both characters are so likeable and real, they fit perfectly with their characters and make each viewing as enjoyable as the last. Kate Winslet, as well, is one of my favorite actresses. She fits so well in period pieces like this one.
This film is great whether or not you've read the book. It's good all on it's own. My only complaint is that I cannot picture Eleanor as only 19. While I've always pictured her well above her years, I have a difficult time accepting her age in the film. This is overlooked by Emma Thompson's brilliant portrayal of her.
Loved it- watched it twice in a row the first time
Wonderful story, wonderful film. Emma Thompson more than deserved her Oscar for her novel-to-screenplay adaptation. Eleanor Dashwood (Thompson) along with her mother (Gemma Jones- one to watch in the upcoming "Bridget Jones' Diary" movie)and her sisters Marian (Kate Winslet) and Margaret are grieving the loss if their father. The father also has a son from a previous marriage, and his greedy wife, Fanny Farely, convinces her husband to give the Dashwood women far less a yearly allowance than his father's will requested him to do. This leaves the poor Dashwood ladies in a predicament: they must leave their lovely home and watch as Fanny moves herself right in. However, once Eleanor meets Fanny's brother Edward (Hugh Grant), a spark ignites, and Eleanor is touched and drawn to Edward's kindness and total lack of prentiousness, which is a stark contrast to his sister. The Dashwood women are offered a run-down cottage by Mrs. Dashwood's cousin, Sir John, and it is here that they are introduced to Colonel Brandon (the yummy Alan Rickman- remember him as the Sherrif of Nottingham in "Prince of Theives"?)who falls immediately in love with Marian. He knows, however, that her young, impetuous spirit is probably not looking for a man like him, so he keeps his distance and hopes from afar. Marian, meanwhile, meets Willoughby (Greg Wise- more eye candy!), a dashing young rogue who is dependent on his wealthy Aunt, but falls head-over-heels for Marian despite his Aunt's obvious disappointment that the Dashwood's are penniless. How do all these world's collide? You'll just have to watch the movie or read the book to find out. There are so many plots and twists in this lovely, simple tale that you won't be disappointed.
