A must have!
If you are a Jane Austen fan, this is definitely a must have.
Great movie!
This is an overall wonderful movie. Unlike Mansfield Park, it stays more true to Jane Austen's story, and it doesn't try to sugarcoat the situation of women in that era. These women are smart, interesting, and as independent as they can be in their society. The acting is superb. The movie is a perfect adaptation of the book.
Jane - Emma - Ang Elements for a Great Movie
Sense and Sensibility is the best feature film adaptation of a Jane Austen novel. It is a typical Jane Austen plot. Young women with no means looking for a good match. The Dashwood sisters' father has passed away and they have lost their means of support. The cousin who inherited the land has put them on a meager allowance and forced them to move to a small cottage with their mother (Gemma Jones).
Elinor (Emma Thompson) meets Edward Ferras (Hugh Grant) and she falls for him. The problem is she finds that he is promised to another (Imogene Stubbs).
While visiting neighbors, Marianne (Kate Winslet) meets the stoic Colonel Brandon (Alan Rickman). He falls in love at first sight with Marianne but the she meets the dashing John Willoughby (Greg Wise) and immediately falls for him. Unfortunately, Elinor finds out that Willoughby has the reputation of toying with women.
In the end true love wins out. Elinor & Edward and Marianne and Brandon marry.
This is a brilliant adaptation in every sense (& sensibility). Ang Lee had success with a couple of Chinese films and proved that he could adapt into the English language film market. In interviews he gave a lot of credit to Emma, stating that she worried how the lines were being said and he concentrated on the visual aspect of the film. This made a perfect combination.
Emma wanted better roles and decided to adapt the book. You can tell by her use of language that she loved the book and Austen's writing. She deserved her Oscar for the screenplay. She also deserved her Best Actress nomination. She has shown in her two Ivory Merchant films (Howard's End and Remains of the Day), plus this, that she is the perfect period romance actress.
Kate Winslet had a success in an Australian film but this was the film that brought her to the attention of the mass market. Alan Rickman was best known for playing villains so this was an unexpected surprise. He showed that he has a truly romantic side. The Hugh Grant stereotype, the befuddled gentleman, was created in this film.
The production values from sets and costumes to music and cinematography are all first rate.
