Director Commentary gives great insight into the idea behind this film.
Other reviewers seem to believe that the Director is completely anti-Muslim and believes all Muslims are 'bad'. I would have to say those people have not watched the film with the Director's Commentary track.
If they had, they would have heard his comments on how Joshua Rose (Dennis Quaid) goes on a killing spree in the local mosque because of his stereotypical (after having his wife and child murdered by an Islamic Fascist) belief that the only thing needed to find those who perpetrated the terrorist act was to walk to the local mosque.
If the director really believed that all Muslims were 'bad' and 'evil' it would have come through in his commentary, which it does not.
In all, I find the film to be wonderfully done and to have had very poignant moments which really showcase just how great of an actor Dennis Quaid happens to be. You really believe that he is in fact, not Dennis Quaid, but Joshua Rose -- a lost man trying to find a way to cope -- and redeem himself. The supporting actors are also quite talented and I believe add an air of realism to this film which really hits home.
dangerously interpreted movie
Movie as a fictionally made would not be bad at all, lot's of action well done acting etc. As an explanation to what happened over there in Bosnia, almost feel like propaganda movie. It would be similar to portraying Tutsi and Hutus from Rwanda were just killing each other and they were equally responsible and same amount of them died. Or portraying that Germans and Jews in the second world war were as equally bad, and they committed equal amount of crimes against humanity.
The movie completely removed facts of massive amounts of concentration camps , massive and organized rapes of woman, and daily killings of non serbian civil population.
So for the movie , I could not put only one star since movie was overall good, good acting, interesting stories, camera shots were good, quite violent ( but due to nature of the film you got to expect that ). If it was fictional it could take from me 3,5 to 4 star.
But No mans land (oscar winner), Behind enemy lines, Welcome to Sarajevo, and Grbavica ( golden bear winner) were much better movies in my opinion.
