The best war movie ever made
From the traumatic opening sequence to the sad ending, Saving Private Ryan is the best war movie available. Some people criticize the graphicness of the violence, but this is what the fighting of WWII was like. This movie is a realistic portrayel of the Normandy beach landing and the events after.
Saving Private Ryan uses totally authentic gear and weaponry along with an excellent cast. If you have any interest in a realistic WWII movie, be sure to buy Saving Private Ryan.
How can anyone compare this to "Pearl Harbor"
If some ignorant person can write off any movie with Vin Diesel in it, I certainly get to write off any movie with Ben Affleck. To say that "Pearl Harbor" is a better movie is just and insult.
not exploitation
I did not see this movie as an exploitation of sad events. I saw it as an homage to the soldiers of WWII. It is done very tastefully. I also respect Spielberg's sincerety on the project because of the work he did making World War II documentaries for PBS (he obviously made little or no profit on this), the work he did on supporting the WWII memorial and the fact that his father was a veteran. Also, you can not put time, effort and money into a big budget movie without making money from it.
