Romeo Is Bleeding Reviews
The Story Of A Cop Who Wanted It Bad And Got It Worse!
Gary Oldman plays a cop so crooked it's amazing he can walk in a straight line. Life is good, or so he thinks, as he plays informant for the mob, and cheats on wife Annabella Sciorra with mistress Juliette Lewis. Everything comes crashing down when he is assigned to look after hitwoman Lena Olin. The mob considers her dangerous, and wants her dead. She, however, has plans of her own. The script has a few difficulties, sometimes becoming a little too self-consciously oblique. But Oldman is superb as the duplicitous jerk who nonetheless has some vestigial moral sense. The standout, though, is Olin as the last word in femme fatale and Scary Russian Mobster, as outrageously sexy as she is spectacularly sadistic. This lady is MEAN (but very cool).
The sound is crystal clear, though limited to a 2.0 mix. Generally speaking, a very nice 1.85:1 widescreen transfer. The menu is basic, and the only extra is the trailer, which appears to be cropped, even at 1.85:1.
Highly recommended. What with all the great gangster movies coming out these days, it's nice to see one from a few years ago resurface. And Lena Olin's Mona Demarkov could frighten even Ben Kingsley's Don Logan.
Take that, ya dirty cop, ya!
And take it, he did! A cop working to entrap dirty, rotten mobsters finds out quickly just how soiled HE is in this filthy little romantic satire. Gary Oldman is the cop with his hand in everything . . . and up everything. Lena Olin is fabulous as the beautiful but evil temptress and mobster's moll. But fear not! She's no sweetheart to feel pity for. There is no mucking about in this story with shedding tears for the ruined virgin. If a woman can be a rapist, then look no further. This is a story of pure obsession, and a desire to possess without reason. Murder, torture, adultry, there are no rules. I became so tightly drawn in by these characters, that I forgot what the hell the cop was doing there to begin with! You'll find no good-guys, either, try as you might. I have never cheered so hard for the bad ones to win as I have in this movie. Lena Olin is just so rotten you'll look side-ways at your kids for the rest of your life. Gary Oldman, the upholder of the law, fumbles that particular ball non-stop, and he likes it! You will, too.
