"thats all you got","thats what i got"!!!!!! john wayne to ward bond in "rio bravo"
i really don't know how to begin this review except to say that this is one of john wayne's,dean martin's and howard hawks best films. everything just comes together and there isn't one false note in it's 141 min. running time!it never loses it's stride and my only problem with it is that i wanted it to go on longer.wayne is a sheriff tring to hold a rich mans brother for murder as the brother hires killers to break him out and kill wayne! dean is the one time righthand man of wayne's who is now a hopeless drunk but when the chips are down steps up to help. walter brennan is his other helper and he's tough and funny but also gimpy, now add a young rick nelson(who is really very good here) as a babyfaced gunfighter who also helps and you have one great western. now add angie dickinson as waynes love intrest and you have a classic! the film really belongs to dean though, and his drunken gunfighter tring for a second chance is dead on and dean was never better than this,he really colud act and this is a shineing moment in his acting! the whole thing is action packed and just more fun than it has a right to be!!! the cast looks to be having a great time and it carrys over the screen to those watching. you can't go wrong going to "rio bravo"!!!! check it out!!!
A Great Movie
Rio Bravo is one of my favorite John Wayne movies. It has plenty of action, along with well placed doses of humor. This is a film that my whole family enjoys watching together.
Sorry don't get it done, dude!
This is the greatest movie ever.
As a classical film buff I keep asking myself what are the 5 or 10 best movies. Rio Bravo is always among my top 5 for sure, but I can't make up my mind about the order. Yesterday, August 15, having one of those days when I can't get in the mood of reading and feeling so tired that I just wanted to sit back and relax without necessarily falling asleep, I browsed through my collection of classics and finally picked this one up. Instinctively I was picking the one that is the answer to my doubts. Yes, this is the best. I can't tell why. It just gave phisically and mentally tired self what it longed for.
But if I have to pin point, there is Dean Martin as the Borrachón, acting wonderfully. Ricky Nelson as himself (not acting) also wonderful. Then, of course, the Duke, what can you say?! But Angie Dickinson... goodness! she is lovable to the extreme. How can anybody not fall in love with her?
Oh, and the music, and the 2 songs that Dean and Ricky sing together with the guitar... beautiful "my rifle, pony and me", absolutely wonderful, that mood, those voices...
No. I haven't forgotten. Indeed. on purpose I have left for last Mr. Walter Brennan. This man is a true icon, a character bigger than the screen that tries to frame him. He is the best secondary actor in the history of film-making. But secondary is not a fair description for him because he is absolutely the star of every movie he's in. God, was he a good actor! Old Stumpy.
The only thing I would like to ask is that Criterion or somebody would put this legendary film on a decent edition, because this is not a regular classic movie (for that matter, any Howard Hawks film), this is something deserving a second dvd with bonus footage and interviews and booklet and what have you...
RIO BRAVO, by Howard Hawks. Número Uno, baby.
