Riki-Oh - The Story of Ricky Reviews

Best movie... EVER! FULL SKULL BABY! FULL SKULL BABY! FULL SKULL BABY! FULL SKULL BABY! FULL SKULL BABY!
I have seen... the best movie... in the history of mankind. Riki-Oh: The Story of Ricky is a Hong Kong martial arts/action film made in 1991, directed by Ngai Kai Lam and starring Siu-Wong Fan as Riki. It deals with a young guy who is imprisoned in a futuristic privatized prison in the year 2001 (hee hee) for manslaughter. In the prison Ricky faces off against the almost supernaturally skilled martial artist inmates who are known as the Gang of Four, who are charged with keeping the prisoners in line under the control of a corrupt warden. Ricky stands up to the unjust treatment of his fellow inmates by these cruel men with his own supernatural strength and skills. What ensues is a violent, insane bloodbath the likes of which has seldom been seen on film.

This film is well-known mainly because it is so insanely violent. The body count is high, and the deaths are all just god-awfully brutal. There's punches that disembowel people, nails through eyeballs, and cuts by knives, needles, and any other thing capable of cutting. One guy even attempts to diembowel himself and choke Ricky to death with his exposed entrails. There's hardly a 2 minute period in the film where someone isn't hurting in some way. And by "some" I mean "horrifically terrible."

And when the violence isn't enough in itself, it goes to extremes that aren't even physically possible. Ricky gets cut deeply across the inner part of his forearm... his right arm crippled, he wouldn't stand a chance against the evil prison-keepers. So, he does the same thing any of us would do in the same situation: HE TIES HIS TENDONS BACK TOGETHER AND KEEPS ON FIGHTING!!!!!!! RAAAARRRR!!!!!!

Like I said... this movie should have won the Oscar for Movie of the Year in 1991. I mean, what won that year anyway? Hmmm... The Silence of the Lambs. Yeah... this movie's WAAAAAYYYY better. Did you see anyone punch the top of anyone's head off in that move? No? I didn't think so. All that movie had was some freaky guy who tucked his junk back and made some chick put lotion on itself. HAH! This movie has a part where one of the bad guys KICKS A DOG IN HALF!!!!!! Top that Hannibal Lecter!!!

But yeah... it's a hoot. I think I have a new favorite movie. Anything that makes the violence in Kill Bill look like an episode of Care Bears is tops in my book!

Asian attempt at Troma type entertainment. FULL SKULL BABY! FULL SKULL BABY! empty skull, sniff. empty skull, sniff. empty skull, sniff.
I enjoy the genre of over the top gore comedy but this one didn't interest me. The story was very slow paced and uninteresting with some pretty unimaginative gore.

It was also ridiculous and not in a comedic way but a 'that is stupid' way. People are smashing through stone walls a lot.

The final 'ultra' gory finale really didn't interest me either.

Watch Troma's Terror Firmer or Citizen Toxie if you enjoy this type of movie. Or wait for Poultrygeist which will probably be pretty Tromariffic.

I don't know when this was made but I would guess it has to be inspired by Troma. I appreciate the effort but it didn't match let alone surpass Troma for gore comedy.
