Revenge of the Techno Geeks
Real Genius is one of my favorite 80s films. If for no other reason than the razor sharp one-liners and comedy. The revenge incurred on Dr. Hathaway at the end of the film is brilliant. In addition, Real Genius does what few films have managed to do--it makes geeks seem cool. Revenge of the Nerds tried to do this, but in a much less credible way. The characters are also very well done, including Dr. Hathaway, Chris Knight (Val Kimer at his best), Kent, and Jordan. Even the minor characters are memorable (Dr. H- "I noticed you stopped stuttering, Brody.". B- "I've been giving myself shock treatments.", Dr. H - "Up the voltage."). It features a good mid-80s soundtrack too.
That being said, I subtracted one star for the film's almost total disconnection from reality. Lets face it--there is nothing wrong or illegal with using science to build weapons--it happens all the time. In real-life, the aftermath of this film would have resulted in Chris, Mitch, and Jordan going to Federal Prison (for sabatoging a multi-million $$ DOD test), Kent going blind (from staring directly at the laser beam), and Hathaway suing the Government for professional and personal damages (due to their shoddy base security). Oh yeah, and Brody would end up with the Darlington job by default.
