Family friendly entertainment
I discovered Quantum Leap about halfway through its original broadcast run and watched faithfully through the end of the series. As it began to show up in syndication on cable, I tried to catch the early episodes that I had missed. Watching the episodes from this collection, I realize how few of the early episodes I missed.
This series has none of the shock factor that seems so prevalent in the current hit television series, and takes a close-up look at life in the second half of the twentieth century. In spite of Al's playful lecherousness, the show maintains a wholesome feel that makes it perfect for family viewing.
The show tackles a number of issues, from racism and sexism, to attitudes towards the handicapped, and seems to make an honest effort to accurately reflect the historical attitudes of our recent past. This provides a great opportunity for parents to discuss these important issues with their children.
This show remains fresh and entertaining a decade after it originally aired, and is a refreshing change from the intense shows currently airing.
QUANTUM LEAP 2ND SEASON
THIS IS ONE OF MY ALL TIME FAVORITE SHOWS,SO THE FACT THAT THE PRODUCERS OF THIS BOX SET HAVE DECIDED TO OMIT SOME OF THE ORIGINAL SOUNDTRACK FOR WHATEVER REASONS(OBVIOUSLY MONEY)WILL NOT STOP ME FROM BUYING THE COMPLETE SET. I MUST SAY HOWEVER THAT THE CHANGE OF MUSIC DOES MAKE A BIG DIFFERENCE TO A DEVOTED FAN. THE ORIGINAL "MIA" EPISODE WENT FROM CLASSIC TO LACKLUSTER IN MY OPINION. THE LAST SCENE WAS ONE OF THE MOST HEARTWARMING MOMENTS IN THE ENTIRE SERIES,BUT THE CHANGE FROM THE ORIGINAL MUSIC TOOK THAT AWAY. I STILL LOVE THE SHOW AND WILL STILL BUY THE REST OF THE SET. I ONLY HOPE THAT THE SOUNDTRACK PROBLEMS CAN BE RESOLVED.
Who cares if the songs are cut out? This show is great!
A lot of people here are moaning that the original soundtracks to these episodes have been altered since their TV airing because Universal didn't want to pay licensing rights. While I understand that this is a valid reason to be angry as it is NOT the COMPLETE ORIGINAL series I must stress that only A FEW and NOT ALL songs are gone. Obviously I can't be sure what songs are missing and some scenes with generic muzak did seem suspicious but the reviews here would lead you to believe that it occurs more often than it actually does. The bulk of original songs are still here.
That aside, this season is where Quantum Leap really began to take-off. The writing became more complex and intelligent and the characters of Sam and Al became deeper and more involving. Not many shows, if any at all, have only 2 returning characters and although their interaction is limited (they don't even exist in the same physical environment) you really get a strong impression of how important they are to each other.
My favorite thing about Quantum Leap is that every episode was completely different. So many situations and atmospheres are explored and so many different forms of nostalgia. It also had the capability of rousing up more emotion and feeling than any other TV show I knew of. The other really cool thing about it that no matter how Steve Martin-lookalike Scott Bakula portrays the image of a geeky science nerd he doesn't have any problem with killing people when necessary. You can't say that about The A-Team or Baywatch etc.
If you love Quantum Leap but angry at the editing of songs then pick it up cheap. Either way, it's a must-have. I can't wait til Season 3 comes out!
The DVDs present each show in 1.33:1 full frame, as originally broadcast, with Dolby Stereo sound. There are no extras at all (I miss the individual episode introductions) even though the inner box art says that there is.
