Pumpkin Reviews
A biting satire that works on so many levels
I'm a huge fan of films that realize they are in fact films and not a mirror of reality. Pumpkin fits snuggly into this category. This film is a clever satire on the cliche romantic comedy, the story of the little man getting the girl, the coming of age story, and of the perceived good life. Where this film triumphs is in its manipulation of the viewer. It plays on our stereotypes of not only the "mentally handicapped," but also on our perceptions of what life is like on the other side of the street, or our elite misconceptions. Nobody really lives the lives shown in the film except for in the environment of film. The film has a very timeless quality, which adds to the subtext of the film. When Christina Ricci turns to the camera at the end of the film, it's almost as if you're forced to place this film into a context of reality. It's really a great moment in a great film.
On the surface, this film will make you laugh with its dark humor, and at times it will make you feel bad for laughing. The Music in the film is great, using songs from Belle and Sebastian and The Gentle Waves. Finaly, for those who are concerned by such things, Christina Ricci is mad hot in this movie.
HAS THE POWER TO OFFEND JUST ABOUT ANYONE IF YOU LET IT.
I'm sorry but I have to say if Carolyn McDuffy (Christina Ricci) was in her 2nd term as president I doubt we'd be at war right now. Like a song sung out of tune "Pumpkin" tells the story of a said to be [mentally challenged] boy (Hank Harris) who becomes inspired by a young girl who is smart and also quite beautiful. She is a huge part of her schools A.O.Pi sorority. How is it that one tries to do what's right and everything goes all wrong for them? Ricci is undeniably lovable in another great film to her credit. Marisa Coughlan is also likably nasty as the most hypercritical sorority sister. I enjoyed this film for a # of different reasons.. 1. It's honest although not likely to pan out the way it did. 2. Hopefully it will help alot of blind people to look beyond. 3. Also it is a daring movie that doesn't care if you like or dislike it, it just is what it is. I recommend this movie to those that believe they have an open mind, and don't become offened when they are seen and verbalized on screen..not liking how others may see them.
