Classic footage from days gone bye FULL SKULL BABY! FULL SKULL BABY! FULL SKULL BABY! FULL SKULL BABY! FULL SKULL BABY!
I had heard about this movie for years but was never able to find a copy in video stores, then when the 25th anniversary DVD was released I was all over it. The movie ranges from funny to motivational to inspirational. The training scenes are great, and contest footage is top notch. If it were made today it could be a reality t.v. show. In the bonus scenes director George Butler said they shot well over 100 hours of footage. The extra features were just about as good as the movie itself. One of the things that struck me most is that all these guys trained together, the comraderie was something that will probably never resurface like that again, imagine Cutler and Coleman training side by side! Arnold of course shined the brightest in this film and showed the charisma and physique that made him a legend and Hollywood icon. All in all, you can't go wrong with this film.

I've been a big fan of this movie for years and years. I turned my teenage son on to it also and he just watches it in amazement!

This film captures an era that will never come again, back when Bodybuilding was in it's infancy. It shows the comradarie as well as the competition. It also features (in my opinion)some of the greatest bodybuilders of all time, back when they were huge but looked human compared to the bodybuilders of today who seem to value mass above all else. Sure there were drugs back then, no doubt these guys of the "Pumping Iron" era were not all natural, but they didn't become the caricatures that so many bodybuilders look like now. They looked enhanced by the drugs but not overwhelmed by them.

Also, these guys were really groundbreakers, names like Arnold, Zane, Robinson, Katz, Waller, Nubret, Columbu, Corney and of course Ferrigno to name the most obvious ones.

Not only was the original film outstanding and worth purchasing in and of itself on DVD, but the extra features on this 25th anniversary special are incredible! The special feature on the making of "Pumping Iron" is as enjoyable to me as the actual film itself. It's great to be able to see these bodybuilders as they are these days and to hear their feeling on the glory days of bodybuiling and the friendships they all have that still endure to this day.

All the outakes (they had over a hundred hours of film originally) were so cool to see and I hope that someday they release even more of those outtakes. I for one would buy them, even as a rough cut, in a heartbeat because those days will never come again.

Perhaps I'm being nostalgic, but there was something magical about the Pumping Iron era and this DVD really captures the essence of it. Thanks to Butler and Gaines for having the vision to not only make the film but for all the folks who re-released it with all the extra footage.

Pumping Iron- fantastically entertaining!... FULL SKULL BABY! FULL SKULL BABY! FULL SKULL BABY! FULL SKULL BABY! FULL SKULL BABY!
I bought this thing on impulse; I'm very happy I did. This 25th anniversary DVD is *every* bit as fantastic as the excellent design of it's packaging (really!).
Steroids being legal at the time, Arnold here is a near-perfect specimen. He's 28 years old, 6' 2", 240lbs, and a 5-time Mr. Olympia now competing for his 6th. A documentary "on steroids"- mixing fact with fiction- This film *is* a bit dated looking, yet it's still fantastically entertaining...
A brief & basic summary: starting in ballet class, Arnold and Franco Columbu- his shorter yet still massively ripped friend- are introduced to us in sunny California. Things quickly proceed to the *famous* Gold's Gym & it's entire cast of characters. With Arnold and friends, preparation here is intense! Basically then, scenes keep switching between California and Brooklyn; between Arnold w/friends and Lou Ferrigno w/dad. Ferrigno is built-up as Arnold's *main* competition. This is all preparation for a contest in Africa 101 days away; the Mr. Olympia contest will soon be taking place. This film concludes with that contest, but it's in the preparation that we find the main vehicle for entertainment. It's all about Arnold & his mindset: he explains *how* he prepares; *how* he psyches out his opponents; *how* he achieves a perfect physique; and most importantly, his attitude & relationship with everyone & everything around him. HE IS 100% INTENSE! He further explains this mindset in the extensive special features...
It's really about *169* minutes: 85 minutes for the main film *plus* 84 additional minutes (special features)- a truly excellent value indeed. It's *EVERYTHING* about the Governator himself- Highly recommended!
