It's just WONDERFUL!!!
My mother borrowed this DVD from her local library last year and raved about it so much that I gave her a copy as a Christmas present. Then she refused to part with it long enough for me to borrow it from her to watch. Drat! So, I decided to splurge and buy my own copy. Now I understand why my mother did not want to part with this DVD. It is an absolute delight from start to finish and I loved it!!!
PRIDE AND PREJUDICE is Jane Austen's classic novel about the five Bennet sisters and their mother's efforts to find husbands for them. The Bennet family is without great wealth or family connections so their mother despairs of her daughters ever being able to make an advantageous match. Enter the handsome and well-to-do Mr. Charles Bingley to the neighborhood along with his sisters and close friend, Mr. Fitzwilliam Darcy. Mrs. Bennet immediately sees a glorious opportunity for one of her daughters and as luck would have it Mr. Bingley is quite taken with the eldest daughter, Jane. While Mr. Darcy is an even bigger catch than Mr. Bingley, he is not a sociable man and does not look favorably upon the country folk of the neighborhood. And while he is attracted to second daughter, Elizabeth Bennet, he considers her and her family to be far beneath him, a fact he makes no effort to hide. Elizabeth is not impressed with Mr. Darcy either and finds him much too arrogant for her liking. The focus of this delightful story is the developing romance between Elizabeth and Mr. Darcy as they seek to overcome both their pride and the prejudices they have unjustly formed against one another.
Originally shown as a miniseries on the Arts and Entertainment network, this two disc set runs approximately five hours long. I rarely watch television or even rent movies but I watched the entire program in one sitting and was completely mesmerized! Colin Firth is so dashing as the somber Mr. Darcy and Jennifer Ehle is lovely and utterly captivating as the witty and intelligent Elizabeth Bennet. Actress Alison Steadman is hilarious in her role as the ditzy Mrs. Bennet and the young women who portray the younger Bennet sisters are charming as well. The movie is full of lush, pastoral scenes of the English countryside and the light and airy musical score is superb. I especially enjoyed the marvelous scenes of the country dances, they are a joy to watch! If you are a fan of Jane Austen, you will not want to miss this excellent film adaptation of her best-loved and most famous novel. It is a visual feast and I cannot recommend it highly enough! And just for the record, I will not be loaning out MY copy of this DVD, either, so don't ask! ;-)
Dearest , loveliest Colin!!!!!
The movie of my life! Can it get any better?? It is simply life changing and truly my favorite movie of all time. Colin Firth made Mr. Darcy sexy! His intelligence and sexuality, and 'Englishness' shines through. He has acted superbly in this adaptation, conveying sooo much by saying so little...And he truly posseses the most beautiful male voice, the delivery of all his lines was music to my ears!!! Buy this, it is a classic handsome enough to tempt anyone...
Wonderful, Faithful to Book
This TV, version of Pride and Prejudice is the best you'll ever see.
The main characters are great and even the supporting cast.
It's FUNNY, ROMANTIC and worth every penny.
Enjoy
