Phantom of the Paradise Reviews
Inspired casting-good campy fun!
Great campy rock film. Agree with most of the other reviews posted. I think the casting of Lilliputian composer Paul Williams was a stroke of genius on the part of DePlama. Not for every body but a good film.
Life at last- salutations from the other side
If you're looking for a musical that all ages could probably sit in the room, watch and, more importantly, enjoy- this one's for you.
An update (with a more rock flavored vision) of the Phantom of the Opera, it was made by Brian DePalma in the 1974.
Paul Williams wrote all of the music, and stared in the piece as Swan- the owner of Swan Records, The Paradise and the keeper and signer of souls.
Williams composed the most diverse yet cohesive collection of compositions I've heard in a musical (in a long time), and it really is the centerpiece of this film. What's even more impressive (especially as some time has passed) is how brilliantly (and cleverly) he incorporated the different styles/trends of that time (the 50's homage, beach sound, the glitter rock and the costume rock), yet managed to pull out the beautiful ballads `Old Souls, Faust and The Beauty and the Beast' to carry the soul of the story in song. I'm really surprised that no one has ever thought of reproducing this for the stage.
Gerrit Graham steals playing the Rock Star `Beef', and William Finley and Jessica Harper are terrific as Winslow and Phoenix. Paul Williams is properly seedy as the doomed Swan.
The Phantom of the Paradise was (at the time of its release) overshadowed (and perhaps even buried) by the Rocky Horror Picture Show. I enjoyed Rocky along with the rest of my generation but I remember viewing this- even rewatching it when it was unfortunately double billed with The Rocky Horror Picture Show, and thinking- this is by far the better musical and one that will stand the test of time. Being culled from the classics the way it was- its story and appeal remains `Faustian'.
If you're in the mood for some good fun, looking for a musical with some great music and being introduced to Brian DePalma as he was just coming into his own directorially, you'll enjoy this one.
