I Call It Love
Great special effects and hot Kate Beckinsale are not quite enough to make this movie a smash hit. Cuba Gooding Jr and Alec Baldwin once again remind us why they shouldn't play real life people. The only ones keeping it real in this let down of a movie is Dan Aykroyde and Ted Mcginley. I mean "Jon Voight" as the president, what are they thinking?
Not A Documentary-More Like Titanic meets WW2
First, let me say I've read a lot of reviews of this film and have the reviews of numerous veterans I know who liked the special effects and action, not the story. I am a historian myself. I read "A lot" about World War 2, and numerous other wars. I love history. I read history books and biographies
like other people read novels.
When I read that this movie was being filmed, and who would
be starring, I dismissed it right away. To me, "Tora,Tora, Tora"
was the best film I'd seen about Pearl Harbor. I had "no interest" in another attempt by Hollywood to recreate it....
When it was released to theatres, I didn't rush out to see it.
I read the reviews then, and figured I'd rent the movie when it was out on tape, and be "done" with it. Nope!
I got the video of the movie as a present. I watched it, and
while cringing at some of the casting...Jon Voight as President Roosevelt...Alec Baldwin as Billy Mitchell!, I enjoyed it.
Is it "entirely" factual? It is NOT. If you've watched and owned as much Hollywood versions of war, though, how many of them are? I think people in my parent's day were a little more tolerant of those films then the people I read here. This movie was never advertised as a remake of Tora, Tora, Tora or as
a documentary. The director and film company "did" seek the
consultation of numerous veterans. I don't beleive this movie disrespects them in any way.
I liked the basic plot of two lifelong buddies fighting
over a girl. I didn't like the script or the movie's length.
I have the Director's Cut on DVD,and I've watched the movie
numerous times...It's not great, but its not as bad as some here have suggested. If you want more factual films watch a documentary. Neither the director, nor the film company ever said this movie was one. It is what it is.

They Deserve a Better Tribute
Good Points: great special effects, and truly gripping sequences of the actual attack on Pearl Harbor.
What makes this crash and burn is the lame, Titanic-esque attempt to create a fictional romance in the midst of what could've been a powerful interpretation of an important moment in history. In the shadow of the looming tragedy and war, this stupid and contrived love triangle we're forced to watch is an annoyance. I realize they wanted us to develop a relationship with people who were involved, to really pull us into the events, but they could have done a much better job.
I've yet to see Ben Affleck play a convincing hero. I didn't catch the relevance of Gooding's overacted character.
There are only so many cringe-worthy moments I can stand in a movie, and this one's account is overdrawn. This historical moment and the people who were involved deserved a better portrayal.
