One of my favorites.
This movie is one of my all time favorites. I cried at the very end, because it was so sad. The acting, and special effects are excellent. Please don't let the bad reviews put you off, this movie is extremely moving, and well done.
Like trying to stuff 10 pounds of story into a 5-pound sack.
While this movie was certainly a highly-anticipated release in the genre of recent successful WW2-era movies (Saving Private Ryan, Thin Red Line, Enemy at the Gates) this movie was also the most disappointing.
Although the Pearl Harbor scene had some excellently choreographed sequences, most of the movie is wasted on the inane and predictable love story.
For those of you who are interested in a more historically accurate and interesting depiction of the Pearl Harbor attack, go rent "Tora! Tora! Tora!" - a movie which focuses on the actual events surrounding the attack, rather than showcasing the minimal acting talents of two handsome actors.
I would have given the movie 1 star, but I give it extra credit for a wonderful depiction of FDR, plus some incredible battle scenes.
On the whole, however, this movie was for me, a huge disappointment. As a war film buff, I am still awaiting a war movie the caliber of "Saving Private Ryan." The deaths in Pearl Harbor were of the Old Western-esque clutch-your-stomach-and-keel-over-slowly variety, rather than the more realistic depictions in SPR. I was also disappointed with its oh-so-typical Disney happy ending. (How can a bunch of bomber pilots, dazed by a crash, manage to defeat a patrol of heavily-armed Japanese infantrymen? The Americans would, in reality, have been slaughtered.)
Also, the film was about an hour too long (some might say it's about 3 hours too long!) because it really wasn't necessary to depict the Doolittle raid.
Oh well, I guess this is a film that caters to the constant trend of dumbing-down history for the uninformed masses.
Pearl Harbor
This action/romance film is sure to please all with its stunning performances and special effects. Ben Affleck portrays Rafe, a lovesick soldier fighting for the British in World War II . Kate Beckinsale plays Evelyn, a beautiful nurse who falls in love with Rafe. Danny, played by Josh Harnett, is shy when it comes to girls; however, when he finds his true love that soon changes. These actors wonderfully capture their characters which is really what makes the movie so great and allowed me to identify with them. The special effects are incredible during the scenes when Pearl Harbor is attacked.
Rafe and Danny, life long friends, join the Army Air Corps together. When Rafe falls in love with his nurse Evelyn he volunteers to fight with the British Royal Air Force where he is shot down and thought to be dead. While he is fighting abroad Danny and Evelyn are shipped to Pearl Harbor where they receive the news that Rafe has been killed. Due to this tragedy they become closer and develop a serious relationship. However, once Rafe returns the only thing that can save their friendship is the attack on Pearl Harbor.
This much anticipated film is not only an action film but also a romance. Some consider this film to be a poor display of a war film and that it dishonors those soldiers that died at Pearl Harbor, but what was enjoyable for many is the fact that it wasn't just a war movie. The love story helped more people to identify with the characters and some events that took place. It has a very well written script that had me both laughing and crying.
This movie is definitely worth seeing; and I would recommend it to anyone who doesn't mind a little love mixed with war.
