One Flew Over The Cuckoo's Nest is one of only three films in history to win the Academy Awards for best picture, actor, actress and director (It Happened One Night & Silence Of The Lambs are the others). They were richly deserved as Jack Nicholson, Louise Fletcher and Milos Forman are all outstanding. The film is based on the Ken Kesey novel and takes place in a state mental institution. Mr. Nicholson is R.P. McMurphy who is a convict and decides it's better to spend some time in the loony bin instead of jail. Once in, he stirs the pot and locks horns with the iron-fisted Nurse Ratched played by Ms. Fietcher. The film, as the book, looks at the rigidness of the so called establishment and it's goal of making everyone, through whatever means necessary, conform to its rules. Mr. Nicholson brings a manic energy and charm to the role of R.P. McMurphy. Ms. Fletcher is menacing as the evil Nurse Ratched and Brad Dourif is superb as a mental patient. Mr. Forman paints with broad strokes and he pushes things to extremes. BEST JACK NICHOLSON PERFORMANCE..ONE OF THE BEST MOVIES EVER
This movie is one of the top films that emerged in the 70's decade; you can rank "One flew over the cuckoo's nest" in the same level of "The Godfather", "Taxi Driver", "Chinatown", "Jaws", and any other film from that great movie era.....The performance that Jack Nicholson delivers is absolutely brilliant; there's no way that you can hate Randle Patrick McMurphy, because Nicholson created a charismatic and free spirited character; Louise Fletcher (as nurse Mildred Ratched), brings another incredible performance that results in one of best movie nemesis of all time......The support cast is terrific as well, featuring enjoyable characters played by such solid actors as Danny DeVito, Cristopher Lloyd, Brad Dourif and Will Sampson. "One Flew Over The Cuckoo's Nest" should be in every movie fan collection. Clichéd plot
(...) There was nothing notably exceptional about this film. It was an interesting character study, and on the whole, very well acted, especially by the lead, Jack Nicholson. Nurse Ratchett, played by Louise Fletcher, is more of a supporting rather than a leading actress role. This film reminded me of "The Shawshank Redemption" (1994) - you know, the clichéd plot of somebody is held against their will, tries to escape, finally does or gives someone the courage to do so, as in this case, and the film ends on a happy note. This type of plot line is used so much that it gets very boring and tedious after a while. I think a better film would have dealt with the lives of one or more of the people in a mental institution, and how their lives were so drastically affected by it (which in a way, this film does, but not in great depth). This film focuses primarily on one man, McMurphy (Nicholson), trying to escape the mental institution or trying to encourage others to escape. Overall, I would say this film IS worth watching because of the very fascinating few moments where we get to see the heart of a character, such as Billy's struggle to reveal in the group discussion that he was once to be married to a girl he was in love with, and his plea to Nurse Ratched not to tell his mother that he had sex with a woman, breaking so many rules in the process. B.
