Awesome Movie
I think its a amazing movie, well directed, great acting. I love the humor in it. I guess only some people I met so far liked it. You just have to be different. If you are typical low intelligence american who likes action movies or lame romantic movies you might not like it.
How Can I Lay A Hand On Those Soggy Bottom Boys?
O Brother, Where Art Thou? is the 2000 musical comedy from Joel and Ethan Coen. The film opened to encouraging reviews, but the consensus has been that it doesn't reach the pinnacle of the Coens' former works such as Blood Simple and Fargo. Seeing as I have seen neither of these pictures, I cannot begin to rank O Brother, Where Art Thou? among them. This is infact my first Coen film, and I admit the movie was slightly better than first conceived.
I suppose the motion picture lacks a deep emotional thrall over the audience, but its offbeat charm will surely win over common moviegoers. It is labeled as a musical comedy, and while it lives up to the musical genre it doesn't do so in the comedy area. I never once found myself laughing out loud. To be quite frank, I can barely recall chuckling once. The Coens made the three leads come off way too droll and cartoonish to truly bond with. This led me to neither connect with them nor take them sincerely.
One of the remarkable facets to O Brother, Where Art Thou? is that the film is based upon Homer's The Odyssey. This is ironic because the Coens have commented on never having read the epic. The Cyclopes, Sirens, Circe, and Locus-Eaters are just a few of the characters from The Odyssey present in the Coens' on-screen portrayal.
The film thrives excellently on a visual level. O Brother, Where Art Thou? marks the first entire film made in Hollywood that was completely graded digitally on the computer. The process took several weeks, but the final product is wonderful. The Coens are able to capture the Depression era in Mississippi attractively. While the leads are a little exaggeratedly goofy at times, George Clooney takes the lead and makes Everett unforgettable. Turturro and Nelson are just as appealing as Clooney's lackeys. Other notable performers include John Goodman, Holly Hunter, and Charles Durning.
The film is probably better known for its soundtrack than its visual and narrative qualities. While that may seem hard to believe, the film's soundtrack sold over five million copies by early 2001, spawned a documentary, three follow-up albums, two concert tours, and five Grammies including "Album Of The Year". There is no denying the rich bluegrass score certainly adds to the atmosphere of the film. I am not a particularly huge fan of the genre, but there are several catchy tunes in the picture that you cannot help but enjoy. Vocals on the soundtrack include: Alison Krauss, (the real Soggy Bottom Boys who dubbed the leads) Dan Tyminski, Harley Allen, Pat Enright, and many more.
Overall, O Brother, Where Art Thou? lacks a firm grasp on the audience, but will most likely hold-up for a viewing or two.
Wow
This is an excellent movie. The combination of comedy along with historical aspects in relation to Homers 'Odyssey' is a good fit for The Coen brothers. I strongly recommend this movie.
P.S. the soundtrack has some catchy tunes as well!
