Neil Young & Crazy Horse - Rust Never Sleeps - The Concert Film Reviews
pretty wack
I just watched this last night- the Road Eyes are pretty weird if you ask me. But then they originated in RI, so it's no surprise how wack they are. Neil Young and band give a great performance, broken up from time to time with the Road Eyes moving about the stage and placing about oversized cartoonish versions of amps and mics. And the Woodstock stage announcements and Hendrix national anthem? Why is Neil trying to re-live that festival from 9 years previous? The wireless acoustic and miked harmonica were probably revolutionary for 1978 live sound, and the acoustic portion sounds great, as does the audio on Crazy Horse and the rest of the show.
Great film, mediocre DVD
Well, as another reviewer here said, pretty wack, but in a good way. I've been a fan of the album Live Rust since about 1981 and even through college and after, for whatever reason, I never saw this film. THen I got it as an inspiration after Neil's release of Living WIth War since it sounded so Crazy Horse-like. This film captures Neil at his finest in his accoustic guitar sense and then even more powerfully with his venerable band, Crazy Horse. Wow! THere are certain moments in rock-n-roll on film that you know will never be repeated and have an aura all their own, legendary, this film is one of those moments. The Road-eyes are, quite frankly, kinda wierd but at the same time hillarious as you see their glowing eyes bobbing to the rhythm around and back stage. And two of the lil' fellas actually do an impromptu ho-down hootenany dance, front and center stage during the guitar break of Cinnamon Girl. yeah, it's freaky, but it's cool and proves Neil is truly in his own world. Now the DVD, special features noticeably lacking. They could have juiced this up quite a bit more, especially considering this is most likely his most famous concert in his solo career. But Neil is tight, in prime form and the surround sound quality is right on. You feel like you're part of the concert. It's everything I thought it would be and more and the price can't be beat. The four stars is for the lack of real featurs on the DVD, as a historical rock-n-roll film, it's catagory five all the way... Like A Hurricane!
