A Dream that could never be!
Akward introductions: Michael, 28 years of age promises to Julia on his 28th birthday in a token bond between best friends. The director selects the name Michael appealing to the fact that it is the most popular name in America. Michael telephones Julia too tell her, he will be getting married Saturday too Kimi, the daughter of billionaire owner of the Soxes baseball team. Julia has 4 days to break up the wedding. She tells George, "I'm going to bring him back to me". Cameron Diaz, the original California girl, is "everything so perfect" as the character Kimi. Kimi is the daughter of aristocracy confined to a life of privilege, but genuinely finds love. Akwardly, Kimi greets Julia at the airport telling her, "I never had a sister. You are my new best friend. It is time to force your self to get personal". Julia and Michael romantic relationship had no priorities, no mention of love, and was "wrong from the start".
Can the permanency of a relationship be determined by a kiss? "He can kiss!" Kimi social criticisms of Michael were set aside, "I threw away the list". Kimi tells Julia, "I am Jealous of you. You win. Michael puts you on a pedestal. Julia believes she can win Michael back telling George, "I'll change. I'm not the girl I once was. I am comfortable with love."
A backfired plan: Financial differences stress relationships making the marriage a long shot. Julia schemes too use this knowledge to separate Michael and Kimi. Julia suggests to Kimi that she ask her father give Michael a blue suit job, be close to home and dad and mom help Michael avoid the 52 week on interviewing, "bad hotels and bad restaurants". Kimi introduces the job as Walters reorganizing attempt to clean up PR and begs him to take the six month job. Michael threatens to break up with Kimi telling her "be honest", "you don't want to drop out of school", "you have zero respect for my job which I happen to love", and "I'm not good enough". Kimi's vulnerability softens Michaels emotions and he takes her back as she clings to him screaming "I'll just die". Kimi's love for Michael seems genuine.
Julia wants help, so she calls George telling him, "George you have got to think of something." George tells Julia, "your butting in" too which Julia tells George, "perfectin is annoying but endearing." Julia is desperate. "I can make him happier than her". George asks Julia, "Is this about winning? A prior claim!" George's advice is too be truthful by having Julia tell Michael that she loves him.
Reverse psychology stirs Michael take time and say good bye to Julia. Over 20 years the two have grown close and he tells her, as a friend, "your practically the best man". Julia can not be direct about telling Michael that she loves him. "People think they know about each other". Julia pretends too be engaged to George. Kimi tells Julia, "so many broken relationships must have hurt" and now she has found happeniness. George is asked how Julia and he met. George explains he met Julia at a mental institute, "breezing through the door from the electro shock therapy." Julia was an answer to his prayer upon which the Kimi's family join in singing. Kimi tells Michael you must "Tell someone that you love them immediately or the moment will forever pass." Michael becomes, "crazy jealous" but frankly levels with Julia telling her, "we never used love in our relationship", "you can't win them all".
Julia's email asking the Editor to fire Michael was accidently sent from Walter offices. Michael's boss tells him about the email and its contents and this forces Michael to call of the Wedding. Julia indirectly admits to Michael, "I do bad things to honest people", but does not immediately confess that she wrote the email.
Miracle of love: Michael attends the brunch and no one knows that the wedding is off. Michael admits to Julia that "It was crazy to fall for someone I hardly knew." Julia asks Michael, if he still wants to marry Kimi? Michael answers affirmatively. Michael requests Julia to talk with Kimi. Kimi tells Julia, "How could Michael think I and my father could do such a thing?" Julia tells Kimi, Michael wants Jello because he is comfortable with Jello. Kimi says she could be Jello. Julia tells Kimi, "you can never be Jello".
A dream that could never be: Julia reports to Michael that Kimi is crazy in love with him. Michael will choose Kimi and Julia courageously tells Michael, "choose me, let me make you happy. I love you!" and Julia and Michael kiss. Kimi sees the two kissing and runs away. Michael is chasing Kimi and Julia is chasing Michael. At the train station, the place where Michael proposed to Kimi, Julia confesses to Michael that she wanted him to become angry at Kimi and break up, "I was trying to win you back". Michael graciously says, "thank-you for loving me that much."
Cat fight: Julia finds Kimi in the womens bathroom in a sport arena. Kimi calls Julia a series of profane names and stoops to insult Julia's occupation calling her a "big haired food critic" phony. Julia admits that she tried to steal Michael away from Kimi and that she lost. "He does love me, he loves you. He sure wants to marry you." "The world is just as it should be. My best friend has won the best woman." Marriage is beautiful. Marriage is a wonderful union and celebration of life.
Shame on the directors! I found the use of the F word and the B word in this movie shockingly inappropriate. I didn't like the "Will and Grace" sub theme. The director could have established that Julia and George were friends, instead of making a religious-political statement.
Disappointing
I don't get what's so great about this movie. I found it to be a huge let down. This is an ultimately disappointing film despite good performances from all of the leads. The premise is simple, Jules and Mike have a passionate affair in their college days, this then becomes 'best friendship' in no small part due to Jules commitment phobia. One day Jules gets a call from Mike to say that he is getting married in four days and inviting her to the wedding. At this point Jules realizes just how much she really loves Mike and determines to split-up Mike and Kim. The film follows her efforts to do this. However, at every turn she is thwarted by the happy couple who get back together.
This film has the good grace to make Julia Roberts character finally admit that she behaved like a semi-psychopath, but even then that confession is wrapped in pseudo-romantic humour which implies: 'Aw, shucks, well that's OK then.'
Unfortunately not really worth watching. A pity, because it could have been much better, with its unusual take as a non-feelgood romantic comedy.
