Things that go "BOO!" in the night FULL SKULL BABY! FULL SKULL BABY! FULL SKULL BABY! empty skull, sniff. empty skull, sniff.
Fully computer-animated effects, slapstick humor, and Disney in-jokes... Disney and Pixar have done it together for the fourth time. "Monsters Inc." creates a unique and whimsical other world where your meighbors slip down the sewer, you wear garbage-smelling deoderant to attract the opposite sex... and electrical power is generated by screams from kids in our world. Jimmy Sullivan, a.k.a. Sully, is the all-time scare champion in the Monsters Inc. company, although this big furball does have a soft side. He and his sarcastic sidekick, Mike the cyclops, end up trying to protect an adorable little girl nicknamed Boo from evil, slippery Randall the chameleom monster, as well as the rest of the monsters who are deathly scared of children.

The movie does have many good points. The Star Wars Episode II teaser trailer took my breath away, and the cartoon trailer with the birds on the telephone wire was as inspiring as it was hilarious. (THIS IS FOR ANYONE WHO EVER GOT PICKED ON FOR BEING A FREAK!!!) The movie itself was funny, the scenes with Randall's disappearing act were genuinely suspenseful, and it offers natural suggestions for supernatural phenomena such as monsters coming out of kids's closets.

However, I gave the movie three stars because it isn't quite up to normal Disney-Pixar standards. The characters' personalities aren't as well rounded as in "A Bug's Life" or the "Toy Story" movies, and they are harder to relate to. While there was enough humor to last though the movie's 90 minutes, there were no real laugh-your-head-off-and-accidentally-spill-your-coke-on-the-person-in-front-of-you kind of moments.

"Monsters, Inc." is a fun movie, but still, I've seen a lot better.

The best animated film of the year! FULL SKULL BABY! FULL SKULL BABY! FULL SKULL BABY! FULL SKULL BABY! FULL SKULL BABY!
I was lucky enough to see an advance screening of this movie the past weekend and *highly* recommend it to everyone: kids, adults, monsters--you all have to go see this one! The newest movie from CGI geniuses Pixar, the studio that brought you the "Toy Story" movies and "A Bug's Life", is a sheer delight from beginning to end. The characters are cleverly designed and fun to watch, the animation is brisk and colorful, the dialogue funny and sparkling, the voice casting perfect, and most important of all, the story compelling and intriguing. This is a cartoon that insults no one's intelligence--it's perfect for the kids as well as adults, without condescending or sinking into juvenile humor (well, there are a few toilet jokes, but they're so lightly done as to be inoffensive to anyone).

This "E.T. in reverse" story has wonderful plot ideas--monsters in the closet scare human kids to create "scream energy" to power their city, Monsteropolis--but monsters are as afraid of kids as kids they are of monsters. When a charming and cuddly little tot nicknamed "Boo" escapes into the monster world, it's up to scaremonster Sulley and his nervous cohort Mike to save the kid, put her back where she belongs, and keep anyone else from finding out she's loose in the monster world--but Sulley's sinister co-worker Randall (a charmingly oily chameleon) has devious plans for little Boo...

There's so much detail going on that this one demands you see it multiple times (and with a plot, characters and voice acting as charming as this, you will *want* to). The voice acting is spot-on (I've always felt John Goodman was a great actor; who would have ever expected a blue and purple monster would be one of his finest roles?) and the care and attention Pixar has put into the making of this film shows: every frame sparkles with color and wit, and the last-act chase through the Monsters, Inc. factory, where Sulley, Mike, Boo and Randall leap from closet door to closet door thousands of feet above the factory floor is amazingly designed, brilliant and inspired, a breathtaking edge-of-your-seat chase that rivals the Death Star Attack in "Star Wars." Best of all, it features a sweet and emotional ending that had the cynical New York professional crowd I was seeing it with literally go "Awwwwwwwwww..." aloud. And if you have any doubt as to the sense of fun that this movie inspires, check out Sulley and Mike's Amazon.com Customer Reviews and Wish Lists! Heck, *I'd* buy Mike that copy of Toni Morrison's "The Bluest Eye"!

"Monsters, Inc": the best animated film of the year? Absolutely...maybe even the best *film* of the year. Certainly the most fun--and that's exactly what we need right now.

Original, heartwarming, and hilarious FULL SKULL BABY! FULL SKULL BABY! FULL SKULL BABY! FULL SKULL BABY! FULL SKULL BABY!
Pixar has done it again. First came the two Toy Story films, and now comes "Monster's Inc," a surprising treat for kids and adults to share.
When I first saw the trailer for this movie, I wasn't sure what to make of it. Pixar has a brilliant way of not giving away much in their previews so audiences are drawn with curiosity to find out what the writers could possibly do with monsters. I'm pleased that they came up with a good idea.
The plot of "Monster's Inc" is light enough for kids to enjoy and imaginative enough to keep Disney/Pixar's reputation for great movies solid. There are plenty of sight gags to keep the movie consistently funny and some touching moments to add a "human" element to the monster characters.
Also, some great actors lend their voices to this one, including Billy Crystal and John Goodman as the main characters. These two have great chemistry (even if it is only vocal) just like the kind Tom Hanks and Tim Allen shared in the Toy Story movies. And look for other comical stylings from actors like Jennifer Tilly, Steve Buscemi, and John Ratzenberger.
I don't mean to keep going on about Pixar, but, let's face it, their animation is stunning! Example: Just look at Sully's fur and notice the VERY fine detailing. The DVD offers a crisp picture so one can fully appreciate all of the hard work that went into each frame of the movie.
Overall, "Monster's Inc" is a wonderful family film and a great DVD with loads of extras. So check it out....and don't go in the closet!
