Monster's Ball VHS Tape FULL SKULL BABY! FULL SKULL BABY! FULL SKULL BABY! FULL SKULL BABY! empty skull, sniff.
Condition: One rating point deducted
Reason: The tape was brand new, however, something had punctured through the clear plastic, cardboard cover and the black tape case near one of the round wheels. This caused a very loud noice when the tape played. I was able to pop the piece back in line and the tape plays fine now. Thank you.

A Powerful Movie FULL SKULL BABY! FULL SKULL BABY! FULL SKULL BABY! FULL SKULL BABY! empty skull, sniff.
This is a powerful movie.Much has been made of the pivotal sex scene, where our budding lovers shed their clothes for an explicit bout of rumping. This is an actors' movie and everyone acts their hearts out. This film takes a powerful look at two ordinary people and the forces that bring them together without ever feeling drawn out or exploitive. Although the subject matter can be unsettling at times, it always remains disturbingly down to earth. It does gradually become more interesting. This is great stuff. Monster's Ball should win awards.

Intense FULL SKULL BABY! FULL SKULL BABY! FULL SKULL BABY! FULL SKULL BABY! empty skull, sniff.
Monster's Ball is an intense and even steamy movie that chronicles the life of three generations of prison officers who worked on Death Row in a Georgia prison. Each has their personal demons, and Halle Berry plays the downtrodden waitress stumbling from tragedy to tragedy, bravely trying to hold her life together as it seems bent on falling apart. After just a few scenes, her life is a complete disaster, but then it serendipitously intersects Thornton's and his family, which is bound for its own series of misadventures. The two become suddenly romantically involved at a vulnerable moment, without either of them knowing much about the other person or about the emotional baggage they're bringing to the relationship.

Thornton and Berry make an unlikely couple given his father's racism (a part played very convincingly by veteran actor Peter Boyle) and it's obvious effect on Thornton, but Thornton's character mellows during the course of the movie as his relationship with Berry deepens.

Be forwarned that there are some pretty hot and steamy sex scenes, not to mention a suicide and a botched electric chair execution, so the movie may not be for the squeamish. Berry turns in a great performance as a woman down on her luck who loses everything only to be "rescued" by Thornton, who is in turn trying to escape his own sad past.

By the way, the title of the movie refers to the party thrown for the condemned that was a tradition in Europe, or maybe it was England. This is discussed in the bonus material on the DVD.
