Mississippi Masala Reviews
Two sides of the coin
The ending of one thing and the beginning of another. Mississippi Masala puts this
idea into motion right at the start. Both sides of the proverbial coin and a bit more
are ever present here. A "couple" of things seem to always be in play, working the
overall message. But it never beat me over the head with it, or preached for one
second. Very smooth directing and just good storytelling.
Characters deal with the loss of a home and a lifelong friendship. The ensuing
dislocation and new beginning. The familiar culture and strange one. Growing from
child to adult, dependent to independent. The older, traditional generation at odds
with the present reality and youth. The clinging parent becoming the accepting,
mission accomplished one. From being single to being part of a couple. Their view
on racism and their experience with it. The things accepted and the ones rejected.
There's a good deal to take in and from during this movie. It's positive and uplifting.
I trust you've already read the Amazon synopsis. So you know this is a love story.
You should also know it's an intelligent, well crafted and enjoyable movie too.
Definitely worth the time.
A couple of shades can make a difference
This is an amazing movie and one I'm happy to have in my collection. The story is definitely not face-paced but has fine detail throughout. You get a feel for the diverse characters that inhabit this story involving: two continents, four cultures and the subtlety of various shades of skin tones. The love story is good but is enhanced by the subplot involving an East Indian's family exodus from their home in Africa. I guess you'd call it a drama? Hey, I don't know but there are multiple opportunities to share the characters' moments of irony, comedy and yes, love.
The real lesson here is- aren't we all just a couple of shades away from being labeled, defined or characterized by someone else's reality? You might be surprised what label has been attached to you!
