The Spielberg/Cruise dream work?
...the movie is less than A-1 movie material. Even if you took out Tom Cruise as the lead, and Steven Spielberg as its director, you'd be stuck with a movie that doesn't know if it wants to be an eye-popping (pun intended, sorry!) sci-fi thrill ride, or a weepy, moralizing melodrama. The problem though is MINORITY REPORT suffers from the weight of having to carry both Spielberg's desire to deliver another one of his preachy, good-vs-evil Saturday afternoon serials, and Cruise promoting yet another haircut and the same lack of credibility in substantial dramatic roles. While he can play action and adventure, and even comedy (witness his fine performance in Jerry Maguire), Cruise doesn't have the goods to mimic Harrison Ford's masterly performance in Blade Runner, to which one must make comparisons. Being that MINORITY and BLADE are both taken from Philip K. Dick's short stories, perhaps Hollywood should've done the "smart" thing by having Ridley Scott helm MINORITY REPORT. Spielberg's vision of the future is 20 minutes too long, those last minutes diluting the impact of what should've been the end of the film. Being a Spielberg epic-o-rama, we're subjected to a drawn-out epilogue, just to make sure we get his point that the good guys always win. Talk about the dumbing down of American film!
Having said all this, there are some worthwhile elements to be enjoyed. The production design and photography, as well as the special effects, are all captivating and flawless. Colin Farrell and Tom Cruise should've switched roles in the film, as Colin Farrell didn't overplay his character the way Cruise does here. Cruise needs to turn down the adrenaline a few notches--this isn't the Mission Impossible series!
There are worse ways to spend [money] this summer. However, this isn't Spielberg's most mature film effort. That would go to Schindler's List, which is more than just a film: It was appropriately a remembrance as well. Too bad Spielberg put off directing Arthur Golden's Memoirs of a Geisha---that will be Spielberg's next mature work after Schindler.
does not live up to the hype.
this was supposed to be a glimpse into a very possible future.i heard on an hbo special that the directer payed the top experts in almost every field to come to his house for the weekend to discuss the realities that will be in the future.the fields included automative, law enforcement, science, marketing etc.im having a hard time beliving this now.the whole point of this story has any basis in reality at all.there are these 3 psycic chicks who the government keeps in a tank.there only function is to send mental images into these computers that fortell future murders.the murder rate drops to 0 and the system is perfect.well one day tom cruise gets his name as a would be murderer and decides to buck the system.there is a child abduction/murder angle in this movie.i think it is unthinkable enough that this really happens.i think it is an abselute atrocity that moviemakers feel like they have to put that in movies.i watch movies for entertainment not to be reminded how sick and twisted this world really is.or two hours i could escape the harsh realities.then some jerk says hmmmm we could use any bad guy we want.lets use a child killer.that sucks!i would have rated this movie a 4,if not for that.steven spielsberg is your director.ill give him yet another award.the most overated directer of all time.this is his best work ever though.theres a lot of slow parts in it also.a lot of police detective type work and talk.there are a couple gross parts but if you dont mind watching a movie centered around a child killer youll be alright.when the bad guy is finaly met,a very intense scene goes on.i was right there.the main psycic chick would be sexy if she wasnt so damn wierd.tom cruise does a great job in this one.this is a very good movie all in all but the hype makes it sound better.this is tom cruises 2nd best movie.this movie drags on longer than most.
The 5 star thriller of the year!
Minority Report is definitely one of the year's best movies! Cruise is a good actor and this movie is a must-watch for everyone! It may be a Spielberg movie but it's not the sentimental flick. It's a fast very creative movie. Spielberg has a great visual imagination! It's very entertaining and thought provoking. It's a delightful movie with great graphics. The whole cast did a great job as well as the crew. It's deserves the raving reviews and the 100 millions it has received on the box-office. It's something for all Spielberg and Lucas film fans. It's a spectacular sci-fi thriller. It's unexplainably good. The film is pretty futuristic and makes you wonder. It's dazzles the mid and the action sequences are award-worthy (MTV movie). It's something that'll be remembered as a great sci-fi classic! It's smart and enjoyable.
Running at a time of almost 2 and a half hours, Minority report revolves around Tom Cruise trying to save his life. The story takes place in the year 2054 in Washington where murder has been eliminated. This has taken place thanks to Precrime. Precrime is a program that uses the vision of psychics to put the future killers behind bars before they've done anything. John Anderton (played by Tom Cruise) is a Precrime enforcer who believes it's great due to the fact that in the past his son had been abducted. However Anderton is in one of the visions. His faith in the program has faded away and now he's on the run (as a fugitive?) trying to save himself.
Spielberg and Cruise are good together. It's not like a reality TV show. It's not an emotional comedy. It's intelligent and certainly compelling. The gadgets are very futuristic and are another enjoyable part of the movie. The story and the plot holds you at the edge of your seat. It's a little something that almost everyone will love. It's has scenes that you'll remember in a long time to come like the Jetpack chase-Fantastic!
It's something that all Sixth sense, AI, Tom Cruise, Spielberg, and Lucas fans will appreciate. It's something that fans of Blade runner will love. It's thoroughly entertaining and Kind of creepy! Fascinating ideas and gripping scenes make this movie great!
