Hmm. Disgusting, yet interesting.
Excrutiatingly disgusting, yet unbelieveably interesting. I couldn't keep my eyes off this movie, which says a lot. The ending left a bad taste in my mouth. But I would not say this movie is not realistic, Oh contrare. Don't know if it would happen today, but the early seventies in New York was exactly as shown, or almost. I know first hand. A good bit of documentary reporting, showing the life in New York as it is for the very poor and young.

Texas gets confused at 42nd Street
This is one of the 100 Best American Movies of all times, and is included in the 1000 Best Movies on DVD by Peter Travers. The movie was nominated for 5 Oscars, and won 3, including Best Picture, Best Director (John Schlesinger, who did not attend the ceremony) and Best Writing. I rate this movie 3 stars or 6.5/10. The best, to me, was Dustin Hoffman's role, that reminded me a little bit of his role in the movie Rain Man (even though that movie was done later). The movie is about a man from Texas who leaves everything behind (some ghosts of his childhood too) in order to become a man of company for rich ladies in New York. But he will never succeed. Otherwise, he will be pulled down into a hole of mysery and depression, along with Hoffman, until they finally decide to leave the Big Apple for the warmer weather in Florida. The movie is, overall, very depressive in its mood. The story is not exciting at all, and the end leaves the spectator wondering about something else. The movie, though, is still very provocative, and tries to touch on some issues that are very well the same nowadays: the isolation of the human being and its survival in the urban environment, and the searching for money as the only one worth value in life.
I would hardly recommend this movie to the general public. Maybe if you are a movie collector, as I am, you want to have this movie in your collection (the Special Edition with 2 DVD's is nice, though expensive). But otherwise, I would rent it first before buying it.
