more has been said about this movie, and I would just be repeating. Watch it - it's great.

Excellent for a musical FULL SKULL BABY! FULL SKULL BABY! FULL SKULL BABY! empty skull, sniff. empty skull, sniff.
I'm not a fan of Hollywood musicals, but this is a good one. A three star rating from someone who really hates Hollywood musicals is a compliment. Consider the source, namely me. Despite the fact that it is a musical, this is worth seeing.

The phoniness, the irrelevancy, the lack of substance, the idiocy, that I associate with musicals, isn't in this one. What we have here is a good storyline and good acting, with songs that don't always interfere with the plot.

The most annoying thing about the writing is the lordly power of the autocratic father of the family. On the other hand, as Chris Rock correctly observes in one of his comedy routines, fathers don't get any respect these days. Their efforts are completely taken for granted, expected, unappreciated. Thanks, Chris, you are absolutely right. Not so with the lord of this manor. It was a different generation with different values.

When the father in this movie gives his family heartbreaking news, that they are leaving St. Louis and all the friends and loved ones in their lives, he expects everyone to remain cheerful in his presence as they bow to his authority. I find that very strange. And a bit phony.

His callousness is later melted when he sees the tears of his youngest child, but for some reason he feels he must maintain the authority of the father, and remain an autocrat as he announces his latest decree. What is that all about? Why must men be autocrats? Nonsense.

The women in the film are painted as boy-crazy. It's a pretty strange world view. Silly girls, constantly plotting to ensnare handsome rich boys, and the autocratic father who rules. Well, what do you want. It's just a musical. A very well-performed one.

I have been watching 'Meet Me in St. Louis' since Christmas Eve 1995. and so far I have not skipped watching every year. Happily, from now on, I can make enjoy with a DVD edition. I think this is one of the most masterwork of Vincent Minnelli and Judy Garland. Yes, this is one of the most memorable musical gem too. This movie shows importance of family, relationship of neighbor. I was deeply moved by flow all the way long heart warming mood and I felt touching melody pervaded the in my mind.
