A really enjoyable story ...about death?
I figured this movie would be different because the concept is unusual. Never did I expect it to be so entertaining. It's quirky, eirie, comical, mysterious, sensitive, joyful and romantic. So many emotions wrapped up in a story is uncommon for movies these days.
The movie starts out focusing on Hopkins health and upcoming death as announced by death himself. However, the story isn't about dying. Rather it emphasizes death as a character who wants to experience what life is all about. The spotlight shifts to death (Pitt) as the central character and all the experiences he encounters during his three day vacation living with Bill (Hopkins) and falling in love with his daughter.
People who criticize this picture often target Pitt as the reason for their dissatisfaction. Well he is the central character and it's a role that's not seen in movies so who's to say how it should be played? Complaining about Pitt's performance is really a complaint against the director's and writers' judgement as to how the role should be portrayed. Brad is certainly delivering a performance with his own creativity and talent, but the director ultimately has the say as to what is shown in the movie. This movie was shot with hundreds of takes for some scenes, so you know the director is being very particular about what the audience sees. Personally I believe that Pitt's performance was the best he's done to date. But there is so much more to this movie than Brad Pitt -- The music and story is fantastic. The acting and cinematography are first rate. With all these things going for it why would anyone complain about it being three hours long. This is the best movie I've seen. It would be hard to top "Meet Joe Black".
Truly a rare gem of a movie!
This movie has so much going for it with drama, suspense, mystery, romance, great music and subtle comedy.
The dialog, timing and acting retain the sophistication of a stage play without being stuffy.
If you're looking for special effects and action sequences, this movie will disappoint you. For those who appreciate thought provoking drama and character development, where all the action is in the dialog and acting you'll love this movie.
Sure, there are some hokey lines and unrealistic events, but the movie is art not documentary. Let yourself go and allow the scenes to capture your imagination.
This is one of those movies that you can see again and again despite it's three hour length. The main characters are wonderful, but most notable are Hopkins, Pitt and Forlani.
The tension and conflict between Hopkins and Pitt characters is in sharp contrast to the soft-spoken romance between Pitt and Forlani. Brad Pitt plays both roles so well with minimal dialog allowing his facial expressions to say it all. Pitt projects an extremely confident "death angel" who is forceful with Hopkins as they have discussions as "gentlemen". With Forlani, Pitt is the naive and innocent "Joe" and plays up his character role with comic reaction to various situations as well as he does the romantic parts as someone not quite sure what to do. As Forlani puts it "diffident in such a seductive way, yet powerful".
Martin Brest is a master at movie making with his attention to detail and perfectly timed performances.
The music sets the tone for each scene in a way that adds to the emotion of the visuals and dialog. It really draws you in.
Although a little melancholy at times, I wouldn't consider this movie a tearjerker. It's a beautiful work of art.
SENSATIONAL!
An unusual and interesting story with excellent acting throughout. Interpersonal conflict mixed with a fascinating love story. I loved the scene where Susan talks with the stranger in the coffee shop and without exchanging names discuss rather personal issues. Brad Pitt plays this character so well and naturally - highly animated with lots of smiles and gestures. So much personal charm and appeal. You would expect him to ask Susan out or at least get her phone number. They obviously hit it off, but after all the chit chat they part realizing that they may not meet again. How sad! The music brings out this emotion so that you personally feel the loss of an opportunity that might have sparked a wonderful romance is gone forever.
When Susan sees the guy again and Death has taken his body, she's put off that he doesn't seem the same charming guy she was smitten with in the shop earlier that day. Claire Forlani is another natural for her role as Susan. She conveys so much with her facial expression and the timing of her dialog. Pitt's part as death is peculiar indeed. Awkward, uncertain yet extremely polite. Brad plays this part with a great deal of quirkiness and subtle humor. He's really entertaining. The movie and dialog plays slowly. It allows the viewer to really study and absorb what's going on. As death, Joe pursues Susan with the same fervor as the guy in the coffee shop but with less animation, he's much more formal and rather stiff - always dressed in black, like an undertaker.
Hopkins is equally impressive as Susan's father. he plays the role with the excellence you expect to see from Anthony Hopkins. Another wonderful performance! He's determined to keep his business from being derailed even though has little time left. He conveys so much affection for his family all the time keeping the secret that his life is about to end.
The music throughout this movie is filled with emotion and fits each scene perfectly. I loved the music so much I bought the Soundtrack CD.
"Meet Joe Black" is a highly personal experience. It may not click with everyone, but for those who appreciate its message, it offers much to ponder about relationships, and seeking passion in work, love and life itself.
