A Great Movie, And Yes That Does Include Brad Pitt!
I am astonished at the number of reviews for this movie, it clearly made a great impact on a lot of people, including me. Yes yes, I heard all the negative reviews from critics last year, I know it bombed at the box office, and romances are not top of my list as film choices go. I remained open minded, however, as I have enjoyed the vast majority of BOTH leading actors work. As it turned out, I will be honest and say I had trouble getting into it...for the first ten minutes! Why? I felt Anthony Hopkins was not totally convincing me, but after this initial uncertainty he suddenly found his form and maintained it throughout the remainder of the film. What a great film too. I was expecting to be entertained by Hopkins and Brad Pitt, but this film just got better and better for many additional reasons. The supporting cast were uniformly excellent, the story of Death (Pitt) deciding to take human form on Earth, (to experience life, love, and peanut butter), entertaining, and at times gently amusing, the love aspect between him and Hopkins' daughter not at all sickly, (though I do wish Ms. Forlani had tried to widen her range of facial expressions!), but best of all some of the dialogue, which really drew me in and was quite emotionally rewarding (and really hit home personally a couple of times), leading to a final forty five minutes or so where I was totally bound up in the situation, which was so cleverly resolved, when it had seemed impossible to do so! To the lovers of this movie, (the majority of which I sincerely doubt are silly teenagers who adore Brad Pitt and nothing else), I am glad you gave it a chance to shine. To the critics, (reading some of the reviews here was almost as entertaining as the movie...hmmm...maybe not!), I was very disappointed in your lack of reasoning. There is no getting away from the fact that Brad Pitt is an attractive man, why does this make people jealous enough that they accuse his acting of being sub-standard? You all go on about poor Mr. Hopkins being embroiled in a nonsense film way below his talents, with Pitt the main protagonist in this offence, infact both are excellent parts of a fulfilling whole. One reviewer did make a worthy remark, that saying 'patience will be rewarded' is tantamount to saying 'survive the dross and you'll love the ending', where infact the whole film must be rewarding to adulate it. However they chose the wrong film to attach such a statement to, as clearly it is extremely rewarding throughout. Finally as to length at three hours. I don't argue that the film HAD to last that duration, what I do say is that it does not matter that it did. It is rediculous to say the film was boring because it was so long. If you didn't find the story compelling I doubt any amount of editing would have lead you to enjoy it. I do know that a majority of people find a two hour film about all they can endure. Even a smash hit like Independence Day, at forty minutes LESS than 'Meet Joe Black', was considered overlong by a lot of my friends,(I felt it could have been a little longer). If you love a film why do you want it to end? To the reviewer who feels sorry for me and others for giving this film five stars, when it is their opinion c**p, your two line critique indicates your lack of genuine opinion, or maybe, as with the film, you just like to get things over quickly! To others with open minds, take a chance here and you'll be amply rewarded
one of my three favorite films!
I must admit that while many groaned at the long running time, I was thinking, "Hey, it's 3 hours of Brad Pitt! How can I complain about that?". But I would have loved this movie even if I wasn't in love with Brad (I would like to mention that I don't appreciate him simply for his looks but for his acting. He is too often unfairly criticized for being a "pretty boy". He is a talented actor who just happens to be incredibly good loking, and he should not be put down for that.). Anthony Hopkins is a fabulous actor and brings a lot of warmth and sweetness to his role of a business tycoon with a slightly dysfunctional family who happens to be facing death--literally. The beautiful Claire Forlani plays Susan with demure subtlety and grace, and Marcia Gay Harden and Jeffrey Tambor are delightful as Alison and Quince. Brad Pitt does well in the role of Death trying to fit in with the living--many of his "discoveries" are absolutely adorable. This movie is full of romance--Joe and Susan's first kiss is one of the best movie kisses of all time in my opinion. Brad and Claire have excellent chemistry, and Mr. Hopkins is perfect as a father making amends as he prepares to leave the world behind. Overall, it is a beautiful movie with age-old but important lessons about love and life. I highly recommend it!
...Still the Best Three Hours of My Life...
Each time I watch Martin Brest's masterpiece, "Meet Joe Black," I am swept into a different world, and I'm truly happy. Compliments to Mr. Brest for making such a beautiful motion picture that manages to change my life, spiritually and emotionally, every single time I watch it. It becomes more and more profound and moving with each viewing. "Meet Joe Black" was criminally ignored at the 1999 Academy Awards. Hello? At the very least, the nominations should have been the following: Best Picture, Best Actor (for both Anthony Hopkins and Brad Pitt), Best Supporting Actress (Claire Forlani), Best Director (Martin Brest), Best Original Score (Thomas Newman), Best Cinematography, and Best Adapted Screenplay. I'm still happy "Shakespeare in Love" won Best Picture that year, because that, too, is one of my favorite films. Yet I am still angry "Meet Joe Black" was so ignored. It's the picture's fans that make its glory live on. Not even "Moulin Rouge" could take my top honors as my favorite film of all time from "Meet Joe Black." And, honestly, no picture in my life time ever will, and that is a guarantee. There is no better film out there. "Meet Joe Black" is a celebration of life and love, and the actors fill the characters with such an immense beauty that it is impossible not to love them. I am a film critic myself, and I don't know how some critics could sit through and praise long, boring movies, where "Meet Joe Black" is long, but is astonishing in every way. Is Brest perhaps a little self-indulgent? Perhaps. But I say no. All he did was to take a boring 80-minute flick from decades and decades ago and extend it into a sweeping, enganging, romantic epic about life...about the people we meet, the trials we go through, and the love we share that makes it worth the journey in the end. The dazzling cinematography shines through in the last act, a poignant series of goodbyes illuminated by breathtaking fireworks and Thomas Newman's lush and haunting score. "Meet Joe Black" will remain in my memory until the day I die, and the first time I ever watched it will be the best three hours of my life, for those three hours changed my life in a way nothing has ever before. I've been touched by "Meet Joe Black," as will you be.
