Superb Movie!
I haven't seen a movie this good in years! The only movie that even comes close is "Somewhere in Time" and that was nearly twenty years ago. This movie is so much better in terms of complex relationships and interaction between characters. It's sort of a tapestry of stories woven together to form a masterpiece...and the music is fantastic!
This is a romantic movie, but not a tear jerker that makes you confuse sadness and love. It has an unusual concept of death wanting to experience life and then finding himself falling in love. Susan is stangely attacted to "Joe" (death) even thought she doesn't know much about him. He's so mysterious and quiet about where he is from and what kind of work he does.
The settings are very picturesque and rich with color. The acting is so well done among the main characters you get the feeling you're watching a play rather than a movie. Hopkins is great as ever. Forlani is surprisingly good and quite natural playing Susan. Pitt is impressive playing roles as Joe and the guy from the coffee shop. Finally a role where Brad Pitt plays a likeable character and he does it so well!
The love scene is like no other I've ever seen in a movie. Beautifully tender and passionate shown in extreme closeup so you can see the facial expressions of both. The lighting, music and acting all come together to create a powerful moment in the story.
The movie's message conveys so much about life and the ones we love. It also communicates a strong message about passion, rapture and finding someone who makes you feel alive. What a feel good movie -- makes you wish it would never end!
Need I say more than, wonderful
I don't know how many times I have watched this movie. And every time I watch it, it never looses a bit of its greatness. No one can doubt Hopkins is an incredible actor; and he certainly brought his talents to the stage in this one. Every movie I have seen him in has been great. His characters always seem to be very similar in type: intelligent, intiguing, and certainly charming. As Bill Parrish, Hopkins definitely showed his stuff. Brad Pitt...I have loved every movie of Pitt's I have seen. Seven, Legends of the Fall, Fight Club...all stunning. While he seems to be a little absorbed in himself, he brings a great show to the screen. As "death" I am sure this was a tough role; but Pitt put it on like he was "death" himself. Clair Forlani...beautiful, beautiful, and you got it, beautiful. Her character's almost youthful naivity and innocence fit her incredibly in this movie. Didn't see much as to why she fell in love with the mysterious character of "death." But realize it was more the man in the coffee shop than "death," with whom she fell in love. Tears rolled down my cheeks the first time I watched it, and the last time, and everytime in between. If you get this one, expect a little bit of a overly light-hearted love story, but let your heart run with it. Enjoy.
A movie to get lost in
Yes, this movie is long, but it's a very delicious long. Like settling in with a good long book, this movie wraps around you as it explores thought-provoking ideas. Besides, what's wrong with long movies? I've read a number of reviews disparaging this film's length. "The Lord of the Rings" and "Ben Hur" are long, too, but both are well worth their three hours length. (Maybe what hurt this movie at the box office was its title, which, in my view, is nondescript.)
Nevertheless, in "Joe Black," I was fascinated by the premise of Death wanting to try out a corporeal existence. And what a great person to check it out with--the wealthy and successful Bill Parrish (Hopkins). He's smart, influential, upstanding, and, wow! He has some beautiful homes to just drool over and vicariously enjoy. (The indoor penthouse pool overlooking Manhattan! I want it!)
Yes, the plot may be contrived, but the acting is stunning. I was pleasantly surprised by Brad Pitt. Certainly, he first captivated the world as the cocky young outlaw in "Thelma and Louise," but in this film he shows he has some acting chops. Especially in the gorgeous sex scene where Death has his first taste of carnal knowledge. Pitt's expression of astonished ecstacy is exquisite. One quibble I have with his performance is the Jamaican accent he affects when encoutering a dying Jamaican woman. Why wasn't Joe Black's quiet, studied voice adequate for these scenes?
Anyway, Claire Forlani, as the love interest, is wonderful, too. And where is she now? We should see more of this beautiful actress in American cinema.
As for Anthony Hopkins, I would watch any of his films just because he's in them: if he's in it, it must be good. In "Joe Black," his performance is as moving as his performance in the also wonderful "Shadowlands."
The ending party scene in "Joe Black" will have your eyes welling as you long for the opposite of what is inevitable.
The powerful, stirring musical score throughout just adds to the emotional punch. See this movie!
