Is There Anything Wrong With This Film?
I don't think so. Don't be deterred by the long running time, it grabs you and doesn't let go, and the last word to use in describing this film is "boring".
Death comes to call, in the form of smoldering Brad Pitt, on the wise and affluent media mogul Bill Parrish, played by an always-brilliant Anthony Hopkins. If the movie were entirely about their relationship, which goes from hatred and denial to warm humor and father/son almost constantly, it would be enough. For a little extra, however, we're given the charming and stunning Claire Forlani as the compassionate doctor who falls in the love with Death, under the guise of Joe Black (Pitt). The catch: he's in love with her as well, and she's the daughter of Bill, the man who's destined to leave with Death when he tires of live as a man. Cooperate politics, romance, sex, and witty thoughts on life and death complete this fabulous flim, rounding it out into perfection.
Anthony Hopkins is wonderful as Bill, conveying every emotion you'd except with absolute genious, and even a suprising touch of warmth and compassion when it comes to his new friend, Death. He steals the show without actually stealing it, leaving plenty of room for Forlani and Pitt to have a complex and intriguing relationship. There are no good guys and bad guys - if there were, you would leave the theater hating Brad Pitt for what he represtents. You simply don't. A movie that's so easy to fall in love with, without being "too perfect" or sickeningly sweet. In fact, it's rather the opposite, revealing our flaws and imperfections along with all the passion and beauty.
You Will Enjoy
Why can you watch this movie 10 times and still be exited to see it again? Why do all your friends who did not see this movie because of some bad reviews like it so much, that they like to see it again? Why wouldn't you want to miss a single minute of it's 3 hrs? Because "Meet Joe script, a superb cast, directing with a vision. Even the smallest details Brad Pitt has never been better and more sexy; Anthony Hopkins and Claire Forlani give a world class acting performance. This story has depth, it takes you from suspense to romance to comedy, from laughter to tears. You sound track, excellent picture quality and generous extras! A real steal for the price. I wish Meet Joe Black would run even an hour longer...what about a director's cut in the future
What STYLE! A powerful yet sensitive film.
It has lots of sophistication and style, but it's not a one-size-fits-all movie. It's dialog and pace makes it seem more like a play than a movie. Some complain that it's too long which would indicate it's not their kind of movie. By no means is it dark. It has plenty of humor and quips to keep you entertained. What a surprise when Brad Pitt start communicating with the Jamaican woman in her own dialect! Pitt's character "death" has an unusual behavior that's really entertaining.
This movie clicks with a lot of people. It fills a void that the movie business seems to have abandoned -- romantic movies apparently don't appeal to the masses, but there is a large audience that loves this kind of sensitivity and beauty in films. Those who rely on gimmicks like special effects and actions scenes to stay entertained probably would not be enticed by the trailer for MJB. The preview does a good job of presenting the topic and general tone of the movie.
Unfortunately the critics are paid to be critical so they find fault with anything they can. Some of the reviews I read make you think that the whole movie is a mistake. They complain about the death character being "cold" not showing emotion and having stiff movement. What else would you expect from someone portraying death? Is this is a sign of poor acting? Of course not. The critics are so full of themselves they missed the point of the movie entirely.
The movie is filled with so much detail, you have to watch several times to catch it all. You're better off not analyzing every scene trying to poke holes in the story. Just watch the show and you'll be entertained and quickly affected by it's message and music. The romance between Susan and Joe is captivating and full of passionate emotion.
It's a good thing I bought this movie on DVD, otherwise I'd wear it out from watching it over and over!
