What You Would Call a "Beautiful" and Brilliant Movie
In my opinion, this is the best version of "Little Women". Although it sways just a bit from the book, it captures the essence of the book perfectly and weaves a story that works splendidly. The acting is phenominal and the casting was done incredibly well. Claire Daines, Christian Bale, and Susan Sarandon provide a stability to the movie that grounds it (and they do it so well), and Winona Ryder brings the passion and character of the beloved "Jo" that makes it such a fantastic film.
I also find this movie a thing of beauty. Everything about it, from the cinematography, to the color schemes, to the sets, to the seasons and the natural shots, to the Oscar nominated score, to the costumes, to the acting and the storyline, are beautiful. They work together in an artistic collaboration to create an atmosphere of reality and eye candy that can only be achieved through a period film. Certain period films have elements that will stand out and ruin the feeling of belief, but this movie suceeds in it's efforts to keep you suspended there, and the whole movie flows wonderfully together.
This is a brilliant movie.
Excellent, and moving
This movie has been one of my favorites since I first saw it at the theater in 1994. I have never read the book or seen any other movie version. This is a truly "nice" movie about making it through the struggles of life and trying to find your place in a tough world and do something of value in life beyond just "getting by", so hard even with the support of a good family. It always moves me when I see it. Winona shines and the other actors are wonderful. The photography and directorial decisions are first rate. Special mention must be made of the music, which is undoubtedly a big reason the movie is as wonderful as it is. The Marches are sort of a dream family who are kind and decent, who one would want to spend time with. This is one of the top 10 movies I would take along to that desert island to improve my mood on those gloomy days. The commentary by director Armstrong is good, and the isolated music score is very nice too.
This updated version is sublime!!!
I remember when this film hit the theaters and I thought, "Oh, no! Not another version! Not another film about young women seeking their place int the world and the men they want to share it with!" I could not have been more mistaken. This movie is nearly perfect! The acting on all fronts is in the least, professional, at the most, Oscar worthy! Notice all the exclamations!!! This movie is loaded with fine detail. From the costumes to the props to the sets(to the haircuts!), this is an expertly crafted film version of the much celebrated novel. The only question I have is about the casting of Gabriel Byrne as "Jo's" ultimate love interest. Mr. Byrne acquits himself well and is memorable, but it is just hard for me to see Winona Ryder matched up with him. Throughout the rest of the film the casting is perfect, the chemistry is superb. Buy this film now! Remember, I'm a guy raving about this movie!
