Lifeforce Reviews
An overall pleasing erotic sci-fi/horror movie...
The theatrical release of this movie made me a long time Mathilda May fan. She's a beautiful french actress and this was evidently the third movie of her career, with most others being only European releases. She excellently protrays her space vampire character, with a fair number of nude scenes that leave most male audience members wishing there were more. This dvd release does seem to have a little extra footage of the "dream sequence", but that's about it. Most of the extra footage doesn't appear to be Mathilda May related, unfortunately. But, how's the movie? It's great! It's a splendid combination of horror and science fiction with the erotic Mathilda May overtone. Truly a classic that belongs in any sci-fi buff's video library!
Expansive and ambitious, doesn't quite carry the day
Lifeforce has some terrific and suspenseful moments, super special effects and impressive, original concepts even though it doesn't realize all that it could have been.
Mathilda May is, in a word, gorgeous. I wish she hadn't been shot nude. That somehow takes away from the movie, it's cheap. She is so perfect that all the blood drains out of your brain and into your genitals -- God gave man a brain and a penis, but not enough blood to operate both simultaneously -- a perfect nude female alien could have been suggested and not so explicitly photographed.
The story overall is very clever, with an alien ship being discovered in the coma of Halley's Comet. For some reason they cheesily used a slightly modified US Space Shuttle as the vehicle to explore the alien ship, which is like putting wings on a station wagon and driving to the comet. I like Steve Railsback, but like Bruce Dern, he's played one too many "crazy guy" roles. The alien ship arrives in Earth orbit about the same time Railsback, the sole survivor of the exploration mission, arrives back on Earth. A suspenseful story is woven. One unfortunate bit of casting is a very Semitic British secret agent. Weird. Another actor could have brought a lot more to the movie. At any rate, the movie progresses from there through some top-rate horrific special effects to an exciting ending with just a few bumps along the way, namely the same extras as "vampires" staggering around through cheap-looking crowd/end-of-the-world scenes over and over again. Overall it's a creepy, scary and exciting thrill ride -- kind of like junk food, tastes great but not a lot of nutrition. Worth seeing, buy it, you'll watch it more than once. Great Halloween movie. For the era it was produced it, it's pretty good. It's not what it could have been, but it's worth owning.
