Review the Movie not the book
I can understand that people are upset about the movie not following the book, but review the movie for the movie. This was an excellent movie with great acting and direction. You will not be disapointed by buying this film. If you like Liam Neeson or Jeffery Rush, then this is your film. It is well written, the sets are beautiful, and the costumes great. In summery, it does what every great movie should: it suspended my disbelief.
Be warned!!
If you have ever heard of the story of Les Miserables, if you've seen the musical, especially if you've read the book - be warned!! Read the reviews!! I did, but still (perversely) I had to see for myself. Why, why, why does Hollywood HAVE to do things like this - take a wonderful story with wonderful characters and turn it into drivel? Because they know "better" than Victor Hugo?
Actually, the first half is not bad. Liam Neeson, Uma Thurman and Geoffrey Rush are all fine actors and do their characters justice. The Czech Republic is lovely. A few annoyances (especially Jean Valjean knocking Javert out and the ridiculous entry into Paris), but the plot isn't too badly mangled. And then come the fateful words "Ten years later". This is the time to TURN IT OFF or resign yourself that you are now watching some other movie entirely, not Les Mis at all. I am fully aware of how long the book is, and how the plot line had to be simplified if it wasn't to go on for days, but the musical managed to do that without mutilating its essence, and especially without warping the characters beyond recognition. Cosette whines and sulks, Jean Valjean HITS her and Marius has been fused with Enjolras to behave in a way NEITHER would dream of doing. The pathos of Jean Valjean's sacrifice is corrupted into Disney.
Read the book, especially the new translation - it's profoundly moving. There are passages I've read over and over. Watch the musical - it will speak to your soul of love, redemption and sacrifice. But pass this one by - trust me, you'll thank me.
Mercy and the Law
This movie deals with being under the law and of the grace that is available to each one of us.. It is a very subtle message with a great big heart. Everyone should see it at least once.
