One of the best of the 80's fantasy movies.
I was lucky enough to have experienced this film in the movie theater when it was first released in the 80's. Back then I didn't know anything about a European version or cut scenes, I simply enjoyed it for what it was, a great fantasy film. I recall seeing it several times and discovering something new each time, it's just one of those movies you never get tired of seeing because the visuals are so stunning. The plot is quite simple, and let's face it, a bit cliched, with the whole "good vs evil" and the stealing (and search) of the magic unicorn horn.
The standout here is the art direction, the movie was entirely filmed on a movie set, yet it doesn't feel like it, the forest really looks like a forest and the demon Darkness' lair feels vast and cavernous. The design for the demon Darkness is one of the all time best make up jobs in cinema history. Even though there is nothing left of actor Tim Curry's face or body he manages to infuse his character with a great deal of expression and personality. The design for the goblin Blix doesn't fare as well because it does look like a rubber mask with little expression other than a scowl. Tom Cruise in one of his early roles offers a rather hammy performance but maybe that's what the character called for. A very young Mia Sara looks like she was born to play the role of a princess because she's just so stunningly beautiful. Her scenes with the demon Darkness are a highlight of this film.
This 2 disc edition really surpasses the previous 1 disc edition by far. For starters, you get the European cut with the Goldsmith score and the US version with the very different Tangerine Dream score. My favorite among the many extars included is the video for Bryan Ferry's song Is Your Love Strong Enough, a great song and a great video. Very reccomended.
A classic of inner instincts
When the dvds became popular I awaited LEGEND umpatiently, now this double dvd of the film made a fantasy come true. Despite of the early acting skills (the main characters manage a fine work though, specially Tim Curry and Mia Sara, it's her movie) the story line and great directiong from Scott brings out the basic inner feelings we all have since we were children, we identify with one or several characters and we can almost play along and live the story ourselves, we learn from bad and good, light and darkness, friendship and foes, loyalties and betrayal, love and hate... we also learn that even the "pure of hearts" are human and as imperfect as we are, the is exploration on the "possible evil" inside us, Princess Lili is the case; manipulative and selfness (the most realist role here), justifying her own "innocent" motivations ---she comes around of course and ultimatelly she saves the day at the end by betraying Lord Drakness in saving the unicorn mare... Cruise's role is good too though too much goodness can be a little plain, he holds his own with his etheral charm, Curry does his most dramatic make-over past his suite, satanic, seductive, really scary, the goblins and elfs are magic as the forest itself down to Darkness cave...
The extras inside the dvds are great and i think each pennie was worth paying for, as a fine item on my dvd collection, also if you can get the Jerry Goldsmith soundtrack on cd, the musical journey is equally magical, even the so-called US release's Tangerine score makes it part as well.
LEGEND as a fantasy fan myself os one of my favourite films ever, love watching over and over and talk friends into watching it with me every chance I get. GET IT.

Classic Fantasy from the 80's
This is a must-have for any fan of the fantasy genre. Of course, if you're really a fan of the fantasy genre, you probably already know that.
This edition is a great package. It's really interesting to watch the movie's alternate cut with the classical score, and the bonus features are also a lot of fun. You'll want to watch the making-of documentary and listen to Ridley Scott tell the story of the last-minute makeover which included Tangerine Dream's electronic score. Very interesting story.
I don't know which version of the movie I prefer, now. It's good to have them both.
