Darkness and Thighs
This was one of my top favorite movies to watch when I was a child, along with The Dark Crystal, Labrinth(yummy jareth), The Neverending Story, and The Goonies. I love the look, I loved the music, it was all so magical and captivating. I have to also add that I wasnt in love with Tom Cruises character Jack, I had the hots for Tim Currys character Darkness, twisted I realize, but I also had the hots for Dr. Frankenfurter. Something about those evil men, and Tims voice in particular. Legend IS a legend amoung the films of the 80's, and will be so till the end of time.

A classic modern fantasy
"Legend" is Ridley Scott's epic fantasy fariy tale about Jack (Tom Cruise), a good, simple woodsman who goes on a quest to stop Darkness (Tim Curry) from blotting out the Sun so night can rule forever. Jack is also trying to rescue his love, the beautiful, innocent Princess Lily (Mia Sara), whom Darkness is trying to seduce. The movie is a lot like John Boorman's "Excalibur" a few years before; it looks beautiful but it fails when it comes to the characters. Like Boorman's "Excalibur", the characters talk in Shakspeare like Middle English, though it's not as hard to get through here as it was in the Arthurian movie. The forest and all the other sets all have a fantastic, dreamlike quality, and it is never difficult to believe that they are the home of fairies, dwarves, trolls, and other mythical creatures. The creatures of the film are all mostly of Nordic and Celtic mythology, not Greek; there is also a major dose of Brothers Grimm in here too, and not the watered down Disney version, either. If The powers that be had not interfered with the script and story I think the characters would not have suffered as much. You must remember this was a pre-"Top Gun" Tom Cruise, not quiet as assured yet. He is just the hero, who is unsure of himself at first, and then learns that he is more powerful than he expected, but still just sterotype. And Mia Sara's Lily is even worst, I really didn't like her at all. Couldn't they had gotten Jennifer Connelly (from "Labyrinth"). And then we have Tim Curry as Darkness. Darkness is almost all make-up and body suit made to make Curry look like Satan, red body, black horns, ect. He really steals the show, as most villians of these things go. I still rated "Legend" high because the art direction are excllent examples of real sets you do not see anymore. Also I liked the story (mostly) that is fresh and original, and not full of Hobbits. Ridley Scott seems to have figured out that he actually dose do fantasy and epic well, he's making a wonderful comeback.

An Almost Perfect Film
The Director's Cut of LEGEND (which is far superior to the Theatrical Release) is an almost perfect film. It has the right dose of magic, tension, 'darkness', and fun to make it be one of those 80's films that can still be enjoyed by many today. The second-to-none use of actual special effects (such as mattes or blue screen) make the film just that much more real. The set and makeup designs are much better than some movies have today. The only thing stopping LEGEND from being a perfect movie in my eyes is that it ends before much else happens. It follows the story pleasently enough, but there is hardly any action in the entire film, even at the climax. In the commentary for this dvd, Ridley explains this is due to the budget of the film, which he did not want to go over, for there were originally scenes of 'action' in various parts of the film. And the film certainly had enough time for some action pieces, with the Director's Cut running only at an 1 hour and 40 minutes. I wouldn't have minded it being bumped to 2 hours to see some action. But it's all about the budgets. Anyway, the film is still better than most from the 80's, and it's visual style alone is what will make you want to watch it again and again. I reccomend it.
