L.A. Confidential Reviews
Oh, Great. You Get The Girl, I Get The Coroner.
L.A. Confidential is a 1997 movie adapted from James Ellroy's crime novel of the same name. The Academy Award winning film was actually considered to be made into a HBO show featuring Kiefer Sutherland. All in all, most will deem the big screen is the best place for the material. Grossing a respectable $65 million, L.A. Confidential has often been compared to other post-noir era films like Chinatown.
Going into the picture with uneasy expectations, I've heard so many appraisals for the movie that I felt it may have been a bit too built up, L.A. Confidential left me feeling completely content. The plot is an intricate tale of the grime that lies beneath a glossy veneer. Overall, the story keeps the viewers on their feet with numerous twists and turns along with the signature corruption, femme fatales, and questions of morality that are prerequisites for every film in the genre.
Curtis Hanson's direction is admirable. The picture doesn't exactly match the richness of Polanksi's Technicolor Chinatown, but there are several intriguing shots and angles that work well. All of the performances really elevate the material to a new level. Russell Crowe and Guy Pearce lead the pack with the finest performances, but Spacey and DeVito are close behind. I also think Kim Basinger gives one of her most convincing portrayals yet. The score is effective but forgettable.
In the end, L.A. Confidential is a reasonably impressive kind of cinema that we, unfortunately, don't get to experience very often anymore.
Russell Crowe who?
Ahh, I love Guy Pearce. And Kim Basinger is so nice and likeable and pretty (those eyes) underneath her period maquillage in this movie.
