Kill Bill, Volume 2 Reviews
Bam!
Kill Bill Vol. 2. There are quite a few films I'm looking forward to this year (Spiderman 2, Van Helsing, King Arthur, Eurotrip, etc.), but above all I wanna see Tarantino's second installment of the Grindhouse epic. The Bride will be back in full fury and there may even be some surprise characters to come after her with sub-machine guns (wink*), but nevertheless there will be the one thing that made audiences and the American Motion Picture Academy turn their heads: violence. The undying staple of the Kung Fu flick. Even the Texas Chainsaw Massacre didn't have quite as much blood, but this will have a much better story line. The Bride's name will be revealed, her child will be found, and Bill will be killed. However, along the way everybody else is going to try to kill her too. Whether or not it remains in the flick (but did in the original script), Go-Go's sibling will fight her, then on to Buck, then Elle, and finally Bill. It's not like she has a very good chance or will come out each battle in one piece, but this will be the big one to beat. Guaranteed. However, this tale of revenge and gruesome murder will be put up against the remake of the Punisher, so it may not quite do as well as hoped for. Still, Vol. 1 went face to face with Good Boy, and blew it out of the water with a BM-21 rocket launcher. Now unfortunately Uma or Quentin probably won't receive a single piece of brass for their efforts (Cannes again, maybe?) because the Globes only took Uma for a nomination and nothing bit the line of the Academy, but who knows. After Vol. 2 is released at least Miramax will be happy (Money grabbing pimps! I'm still not happy about it being spilt into two halves. Sorry, but I'm not!). The DVD for 1 is released the same week as 2 hit's the big screen. They couldn't even do a Gangs of New York thing, where the same movie was on two disks. Anyway, it's Tarantino and April 16th is off my work schedule availability. I highly suggest you do the same, it'll be worth your $10 movie tickets and $50 trashcans of popcorn (I know, I work at a movie theater and, like gas the prices aren't goin' down any time soon). Heck, bring a date. She may like to see a cold-blooded heroine like Uma for once and forget all about Keanu.
For few things in my life have I waited more impatiently!!
Some folks seem to think that Vol. 1 was excessively bloody, lacking in character development and the usual Tarantino spice, but I disagree. QT was able to direct his first "true action film" with great mastery and with all the dialogue wit that has characterized his earlier work. As always, the soundtrack is responsible for about half of the full impact, he knows exactly what song to put where and at what time to make a scene 2 or 3 times as shocking, exciting, fantastic. Sure it's no Pulp Fiction but it definitely is one of the best action movies of recent times. Not only that, it's filled with fun little tidbits and tributes, including many a reference to his own past films, finding those in the film sure is a thrill for fans.
Only "problem" I see is that once again profits get in the way of our enjoyment. I was hooked on Kill Bill and the ending left me yearning like crazy for the rest of the story, it seemed like February was a long time to wait, but then the date got pushed back to April!! I have to guess that the release for Vol. 2 was pushed back just enough time to get Vol. 1 out on DVD, therefore enhancing its sales as people will want to rush to rent/buy it before going to see Vol. 2, or viceversa. Then of course we'll get Vol. 2 on DVD by Fall 2004. More than likely in 2005 or maybe 2006 we'll get the Special Edition pack with both Volumes and extra stuff, bringing the total we spend to over $100 bucks for all 3 DVD collections plus 2 theatre admissions... well, hey, it is showBusiness....
