Jesus
I really enjoy this dvd because it delves into the everyday life-what it must have been like long ago. It also shows Jesus as having human emotions like love and sorrow.
good but not good enough
This movie had a few entertaining parts, but overall was just not very good. The acting seemed strained. The characters were not potrayed as very believable. But most disturbing were some glaring Biblical inacuracies. I don't have a problem with script writers embellishing, or adding dialog between the lines. In order to make a watchable movie from scripture any script writer would have to do some of that. What bothers me is when important historical and scriptural facts are changed to suit the story in the movie. In question: Jesus was told by John the Baptist that he must repent to be baptised. In reality John knew who Jesus was immidiatly. He said he was unworthy to untie Jesus sandals, and that he needed Jesus to baptise him. Also, Jesus was likely baptised by emersiaon, not sprinkling. (He came UP out of the water.) Secondly, Potious Pilate did not WANT to have Jesus killed. He tried to avoid it. But in this movie he is potrayed as loving the idea and making a fun game of it. But most disturbing is the burial and resurection scean. Some historical information here. Jewish burial custom would have a body wraped tightly in linen cloth with about 100 pounds of sticky aromatic spices forming a gummy glue between the wrapings. A full roman gaurd of 16 armed and highly disciplined solders were placed at the tomb. A stone weighing approximatly 2 tons was rolled over the entance by means of levers, and the roman seal was placed on the tomb. Moving the stone would break the seal. Had a full roman gaurd fallen asleep, thay would have been exicuted! Now look at the movie. NO roman gaurd! I could probably move THAT stone with my little finger! NO seal! If that movie were historically correct, many could legitimately contend that the body could have been stolen..or that even a badly beaten and bleading Jesus who had simply been mistaken for dead could have moved the stone and excaped. I don't think I would want to present this movie to nonbelievers as the Biblical story of Jesus!
Great for teaching the life of Jesus
I showed this movie to my 7th and 8th grade CCD class. It kept their attention and taught them the basics fo their faith in a visual way. It is not all the direct words of the bible, but it teaches the basics. Jesus was portrayed as a person with human feelings and doubts, which I feel helps the viewer identify with Jesus. He was human after all.
