One for the Library...
I first watched "Jerry Maguire" when I was about eight, so you can imagine how confused I was. I had absolutely no idea what was happening. Well, I had never watched it since then until I visited my friend and she owned it. We watched it, and I left her house, wanting to buy the movie right away. Not only is Jerry Maguire an incredibly mature and intelligent romantic comedy but the director/writer isn't afraid to have a nice ending. It seems like more and more, movies have to be sad or depressing to be considered good. Jerry Maguire proves that theory wrong. I love this movie. It's a movie I can watch when I'm sad, stressed, or just want to relax with some friends. I really don't think I could say one thing that I thought was bad about it. Tom Cruise is absolutely amazing and made me a fan of his. Renee Zellwegger, Cuba, the entire cast is great and perfectly cast. Maybe not all will love this movie as much as I did, but reguardless, it's worth a viewing. Great people, great music, great story, great movie. Jerry Maguire will have you laughing, crying, and smiling the whole way through.
In a cynical world, there's something good to it.
The first time I saw this movie was just a couple months ago, and the reason was I didn't think it would be worth the effort to sit and watch. But...I started to take notice of Renee Zellweger, and the various roles she played. Even this movie which made her an instant sensation overnight. Jerry Maguire (Tom Cruise) is the most miserable excuse of a human being who has the job of a sports agent, and he gets canned from his job real soon. But as he gets ready to leave, Dorthy Boyd(lovely Renee) finds the courage to wanna leave with him. Jerry's only hope in wanting to stay on top of the game is to stick with his one client Rod Tidwell (Cuba Gooding Jr. who really steals this movie). Ultimately, it is a movie about finding not just a love and respect from other people, but with the person inside you. And in the end, Jerry truly does find it with Dorthy who completes him very much. Not the greatist movie of all, but yes it's very appealing.
Great
"Jerry Maguire" is a romance about the two main characters (Tom Cruise and Renee Zellweger), but it's also a very funny comedy about a sports agent trying to survive alone away from a large corporation.
Jerry is fired after writing a "memo" which displeases his boss. He is fired in a crowded place, followed by a scene where Jerry and his boss try to contact as many of their clients as possible to convince them to stay with one agent and not the other. Jerry leaves with a select few clients, some fish, and a brave secretary (Zellweger). They eventually begin dating after Jerry breaks up with his fiance.
"Jerry Maguire" is an intelligent romantic comedy, not really in the same sense that "Sleepless in Seatle" was a romantic comedy. They are completely different films, and "Jerry Maguire" is better and more intelligent for it. It deals not only with the fun of relationships, but with the hard times. There are a few twists to the plot that come unexpectedly and an ending that many probably will know without having seen this movie ("You complete me"). Cuba Gooding Jr. also delivers one of his best performances (both in the film and accepting the Best Supporting Actor award at the Oscars for this film - "Show me the money!") that has not been surpassed to date ("Instinct" and "Chill Factor" don't even come close).
This widescreen version presents the film in the original theatrical format the way it was meant to be seen. Yes, there are the black bars at the top and bottom of the screen, but you actually see more of the movie (the stuff that would be edited out for the standard format).
This is a great film worth watching many times.
