Inspector Morse - Driven to Distraction Reviews

Intricate. Unexpected. Thought-Provoking. Sad. FULL SKULL BABY! FULL SKULL BABY! FULL SKULL BABY! FULL SKULL BABY! FULL SKULL BABY!
The story opens with murder. A single woman is found slain and there are precious few clues. And then another victim is killed in a similar fashion. There are still no clues. Suddenly, a correlation appears to surface: the women bought their cars from the same dealer. Morse and his crew spring into action swiftly to bring their man to justice. Ignoring procedures, protocols, and even the law, they rush to judgment.

"Driven to Distraction" is a fine piece of mystery writing but the saddest of the Morse episodes. Without revealing too much, we find our lovable curmudgeon a little less lovable. He takes on a decidedly more human (i.e. flawed character) than before. There is a reflective sadness about this episode that is rather haunting.

Another British whodunnit FULL SKULL BABY! FULL SKULL BABY! FULL SKULL BABY! FULL SKULL BABY! empty skull, sniff.
A few months ago, I probably would have given this British whodunnit 5 stars, but I think I'm tiring of British whodunnits. Once one starts to watch the more modern ones, ie, those done in the 1990s up to now, they all start to smell the same.

The problem with this whodunnit is that the chief suspect is introduced right away, and the inspector and storyline is trying to make you believe that he truly did it. Well, as whodunnits go, you can't have the bad guy introduced so early on in the show--it's just an obvious give-away that he didn't do it. It's obvious that he's just a red herring.

That problem aside, it is interesting enough, but, alas, the brutal killing of the (young) women as the crime to be solved is just getting way too old. Why not young men? Why not old men? Why not old anyone? Why not male anyone?

This is our first "Inspector Morse," and we'll probably watch more.
