Inspector Morse - Deceived by Flight Reviews

All I am Saying is ... Give Morse a Chance! FULL SKULL BABY! FULL SKULL BABY! FULL SKULL BABY! FULL SKULL BABY! FULL SKULL BABY!
The reviewer who called the title character from the BBC's "Inspector Morse" Inspector "Morose" obviously hasn't given the ivory-haired sleuth a fair chance. Yes, he is sullen and serious; but if you give Morse the opportunity to grow on you, you'll find these qualities not only tolerable, but endearing. It's just who he is.

For example, he is an adept homicide detective, but he is always visibly-shaken at the sight of a dead body. That trait in and of itself says volumes about this character.

Like William Peterson's character, Gil Grissom, from America's "CSI: Crime Scene Investigation", Morse just doesn't know how to function in certain social situations.

Case in point: The way Morse doesn't know quite where to place his eyes as they dart around the room in the study scene when Mrs. Donn clasps her hand over his. He squirms while any other policeman would console the (seemingly) grieving widow and then simply get on with business.

There is a bonus in this episode: We learn that even in school, Morse refused to divulge his Christian name. He was nick-named Pagan by his peers.

The appearance of a rosy-cheeked young Nathanial Parker is a definite plus. Parker is now an ace TV detective in his own right as Inspector Lynley.

Parker is the ultimate specimen of the English gentleman: Tall, dark, handsome ... and that posh accent that would sound like music to the ears even if he were simply reading the phone book out loud. {{Sigh.}} Too bad he's no good at being bad. - Jennifer Scott

Inspector Morose FULL SKULL BABY! FULL SKULL BABY! empty skull, sniff. empty skull, sniff. empty skull, sniff.
Okay, this is our second Inspector Morose...I mean Morse. I'll admit these are a bit better than those dreadful Midsomer Murders (and you can read my reviews on a couple of those), but not much.

The Inspector himself is just way too grumpy and glum to be of any interest to follow. One can find oneself depressed just watching his sullen character. In both stories we've watched (also "Driven to Distraction"), there seems to be somewhat of a hangup that this guy has never married. So what. Who cares. We certainly don't.

The underling sargeant is himself a bit more interesting to watch, with more of a lighthearted nature about him and more hungry to investigate and take clues seriously (the few that the show actually shows you).

This story in particular was okay, albeit it certainly lacked originality. One redeeming factor about this show (verses "Driven" and Midsomer) is that the two murders were not shown in their gruesomeness. Just the description (a man killed with a live electrical wire in his mouth) was really enough, and I'm glad they did it that way. Also redeeming was that the Inspector and the Sargeant seem to show somewhat more appropriate levels of dismay at such atrocities, unlike Midsomer Murders, where it's just another day in the sleepy little village with its usual 30-plus murders per month.

Really rather dull stuffage, better than Midsomer Murders, but still not worth owning. Barely worth renting. Okay if borrowed.
