Interesting but seriously flawed
INDECENT PROPOSAL is one of those formularized, supposedly heartfelt movies told in one mess of a tale. It starts off with a couple (Demi Moore and Woody Harrelson) struggling to make ends meet and just as they are about to drown in debt, they hit the jackpot in Vegas and then lose all their winnings again. As they are about to hit rock bottom, Robert Redford, a multi-billionaire, comes into their lives to give them a chance to get one million dollars. The catch: Redford "borrow" Woody's wife for one night. They agree, but this of course changes the course of their relationship forever. Woody Harrelson is truly miscast in a role too serious for him, making some scenes unintentionally funny. Yet the other two leads help keep this vechicle interesting. Despite the limited success of the script, it remains as a flawed but ambitious work.
A Masterpiece in Understanding.
What if...? The two words that define almost everyone's life. What if I married so & so instead...What if that job was mine...What if there was a perfect life...? And on & on. Relationships, marriage, in particular, young relationships and marriage are plagued with the question, or the "two words." Indecent Proposal is a masterpiece. An exploration, if you will, into the power of money, trust, love, respect, and above all...What if? The movie casts three of the best stars of their time, Robert Redford, Woody Harrelson, and Demi Moore at the top of their game. It brings us inside the marriage of Diana and David, but also, into the world of wealth, power & deceit. Still, it also sends a shiver to see Redford's character as not being flat, but lonely. His motives, proposal, and pursuit may irritate us, yet we come to understand Mr. Gage and sort of feel sorry for him. As we root for Diana & David to reclaim that lost innocence of love, which in reality & in the movie as well, is unrecoverable, we find a new meaning in forgiveness, faith, and the pitfalls that plague even the best parts of ourselves. This one belongs in your collection and your heart...
Indecent Proposal - Can Money Really Buy Love?
Diana and David Murphy (Demi Moore and Woody Harrelson) are a young couple in love. Heck, their relationship is so blissfully perfect, you can hardly believe it. She's a real estate agent and he's an architect. After a quick synopsis of their relationship, we're told that they tightened their collective belts to take a loan out on their home to buy a piece of ocean-front property to build their dreamhouse...which David designed of course. But then the real estate market crashes and they're precariously close to losing everything. This is where the problems with the film really start. What do the Murphy's do to get the fifty-thousand dollars they need? Borrow five-thousand from his dad and go to Vegas! It would be funny if I was kidding, but I'm not. It's there that they meet John Gage (Robert Redford) and he offers to pay them one million dollars for a night with Diana. Of course they refuse and are offended at the offer, but it gnaws at them. The story really crashes when they convince themselves that she'll do it and it won't cause any problems with their marriage. "We'll just forget it ever happened and never talk about it," she says. Hello??? I initially looked forward to this film in 1993 because I think the "Can money buy love?" question is one that can spawn a lot of interesting conversation, but unfortunately the story just keeps taking turn after turn farther away from what I could consider believable in a situation like this like David donating a million bucks at a charity to buy a hippo at the end of the film! The film is able to keep the viewer's attention until the end simply because you'll want to know what's going to happen, but there's no question a stronger script could have definitely enhanced this movie despite the generally good acting on the part of Moore, Harrelson and Redford.
