"You can't be the one who fixes everything" says Simon to the 17 yr old Cassandra. Wisest line of the movie because 17 yr olds typically aren't good at it. She could have used some motherly advice, but no, her mother had died and couldn't tell her not to fall in love with her sister's fiance. She was void of adult role models as they also pursued the theme of unrequited lust, and the undeveloped characters made one wonder what they even liked about each other. In the flashback where Cassandra's unstable writer father attacked her mother with a cake knife, she could have fixed the plot by providing him with a more deadly weapon perhaps and halted the plot before it went on and on.
No Happy Ending Here
If your looking for a nice English Romantic movie with a good ending, keep looking. It had such fine possibilities, but she let Steven get away, who was the most lovable of all the characters, and the rest came to naught.
On the other hand, if you want fine filming and beautiful English Scenery, this is the movie for you.
