Horatio Hornblower - The New Adventures Reviews
Good entertainment overall... A MUST SEE!
HORNBLOWER'S LOYALTY:
All right the actors are above average, ships very good (even if models are a little too obvious due to modern DVD tecnology...), plot suffers from a little excess of jingoism (but that's unavoidable Forester's novels wich I read/enjoyed long time ago ARE pure jingo... Now "Britannia rule the Thames" instead of the waves is probably more true but who cares...).
Great Britain ruled the world on the XIXth and it's my favorite period so...
Good entertainment, on a par with the Sharpe series if you want to compare with something.
Of course DO NOT COMPARE WITH "Master and Commander" I'm afraid this series will pale in comparaison.
Still recommended. (Specially if eurosceptic).
PS: Why the French are depicted as behaving so stupidly in films (as per Germans in some WWII films) is in detriment of the credibility of the story and gives some kind of "Boy's Own" feeling to it all.
Not that I mind a bit personally, really but can't see this series having success internationally. (a part from the USA & UK...)
HORNBLOWER'S DUTY:
The best of the last two.
The scenes on the ship are VERY GOOD, specially in bad weather!, actually I got the first 4 episodes in VHS and the following 4 in DVD... And they stand the pass of time.
A bonus of this series (compared with the Sharpe series...) is the VERY good cast, the suporting roles are magnificent, Pellew, Bush, Styles, Mathews etc
I must say I was dissapointed by the choice of Harper impersonator in the Sharpe series (he acts well no question about it...) but HE DOES NOT LOOK like the Harper on the books!,he is overweight for a light infantryman and not taller then Sharpe (not even red haired as I think I remember...).
Well that does not happen here, they do justice to the books for a TV series (The film with Gregory Peck was'nt bad either apart from the tendency of the first lady to "concentrate" his eyes on the same close object at the same time if you know what I mean...must be a word for that...).
ANYWAY I CAN RECOMMEND THIS SERIES TO ANYONE EVEN SLIGHTLY INTERESTED IN NAVAL WARFARE IN THE XIXth CENTURY, NAPOLEONIC SPECIALLY, AND TO ALL HORNBLOWER'S BOOKS FANS.

More Great Horatio!
Once again, A&E has brought the world of the Napoleonic Era to brilliant life! These two episodes are beautifully filmed and wonderfully cast. The hardships of sea life and the dedication the men had to their cause are very accurately portrayed. I would defineitely say that Duty and Loyalty are on par with the previous 6 episodes. I highly recommend the H. Hornblower series to anyone, espescially those with an interest in this particular time. You won't be disappointed!
